Colorado Governor Bill Ritter today proposed a $10 per purchase tax on gun owners to pay for Brady Registration Checks.

Though this idea has been rejected by both Republican and Democrat controlled legislatures, Ritter now claims it will bring $500 million to state coffers.

"The Governor's office is using estimates for firearms purchases based on recent purchase numbers, and it highly inflates the number," said the Dudley Brown, the Executive Director of the largest pro-gun organization in Colorado, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners. Since the election of Barack Obama the number of firearms sales have skyrocketed across the nation.

"But even with a smaller number, he's forcing citizens who practice a constitutionally protected right to pay a tax first, much like the old Jim Crow laws," said Brown. "We don't believe gun owners should have to ask permission to buy a firearm in the first place, and we're now supposed to pay for their gun control?"

Colorado uses a "Baby Brady" Registration system system to check purchasers' backgrounds. This puts gun owners in double jeopardy, since they must go through the FBI check as well as that of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. If Colorado's Brady Act was repealed, the FBI would conduct Brady Registration Checks, which wouldn't cost Colorado citizens and would shorten the wait time to 30 seconds -- as opposed to CBI checks, which often take hours.

"Now, Governor Ritter wants to put a tax on that registration as well. He might just as well repeal our State Constitution's protections," said Brown, "since they don't seem to matter to him."

Colorado's Brady Act was passed in 2000 under a Republican-controlled legislature and Governor.

My momma told me 'if you can't say something nice then don't say nothin' at all.

So all I am gonna say about Ritter is that I look forward to him not being Governor.

You say he proposed this...I take it there is no actual legislative language/ bill put forward yet? If there is an actual bill do you have a link to the text?

As an aside: CBI screwed up my file with an erroneous charge. It took me a couple of months to clear it up. NICS cleared/clears me instantly. Colorado bureaucratic insanity.

I got this in an email from RMGO.

Don't think there is a bill in place yet. But my thought is to act and let those douche bags know that we won't stand for it before a bill is drafted. Makes no sense to find an action in motion if you can head it off before it gets rolling.

Feel free to check them out. The are the best at defending our 2nd.

I've made it my personal mission to see that motherfucker is shown the back door to the capital. After this bullshit with the vehicle registration "fees" increase, as if we weren't already getting raped over a barrel, I've had enough. That was the last nail in his coffin for myself and many others I know.

Ohh..... not to mention the complete support of ILLEGAL immigration.
And letting out prisoners early because we can't meet the States budget.
And... dropping coverage for the mentally ill.

So... we'll have crazed illegal convicts running around Colorado more than usual.

Unfortunately, if he calls it a fee and not a tax he can impose it by bypassing the Tabor ammendment (just like the increased vehicle registration fees). Notice that his budget cuts don't include the recent large raises he gave his staff. Can't wait until he's gone.

His numbers are plummeting in Colorado, they say he probably won't get a second term (he really has sucked overall, and not just from conservative view either).

On a silver lining if they were walking slow and saying braaains. We could shoot em. But I think Ritter would tell us not to be so selfish with our brains. They will work in mines pulling carts without needs that Coloradians demand like fresh air.
Yeah I didn't vote for him and everyone that drives isn't going to be happy with him come election time.

I was pointing out this very concept at work to day. Short on Revenue because you can't live within a budget? Restricted from raising taxes because the peasants damn their rights under TABOR? Just institute FEES - their legal and it's a cash cow.

This whole deal about fees has just gotten out of hand in this state. The taxpayers of Colo Spr refused a tax increase 3 times for "stormwater improvements" but our leaders pouted lke spoiled children and got daddy "State" to tell them that they could call it a "fee" and charge us per sq. ft for our land that isn't water permiable and MAY get rain run-off. Fail to pay and they take your property (home, business, etc.)

I'd really like to see some statistics about how the current administration stacks up to previous administrations regarding fee increases/creation.

If this trend continues, we'll NEED things like government provided food, clothing, shelter, medical coverage, etc. as every penny we earn will be going towards fees and taxes.

In Soviet Russia they tell you where to live and where to work.

But they would come out and tell you what they are planning. I wonder if it drives them nuts having to sneak around in the dark like mice.
