View Full Version : Chronicling the build out of Tim's new loading room.
I recently bought a granite countertop business. I moved my cabinet shop from my home to that location, so I'm left with two adjoining rooms that have no purpose. The larger of the two (1,200sqft) will become a play room for the kids and an exercise room. Boring. The smaller one (500 sqft) is in the process of becoming my new loading room Woot. I'll chronicle the progress in pictures here.
This is what it used to look like. Actually, it was normally stuffed full of cabinets waiting to be delivered.

This is the plan. The long row against the wall is for presses. I think I can fit as many as six, though I only own three at the moment. The slightly smaller island will be mounted with vises for AR building. The larger island is just a giant workspace (4' X 8' top). The big pantry cabinets are for gear storage. I'll mount a TV on the wall between the windows. A floor standing parts washer will go on the left end of the loading benches. Probably.

The first step was cleaning out all the crap. Then I had a drywall guy come in and do 8 hours of drywall repair. 20 years of screwing things to the walls really left them looking bad. I painted last week and laid the laminate floor last Saturday.
We built the cabinets in the shop this week and are going to run them over this afternoon.

I hate it when envy comes into my mind....My entire first floor of my house is 715 sq/ft.
Maybe you can find a guy to build you some good counter tops and cabinets for all that space.
<joke>I wouldn't take the first bid though wait til he throws in upgrades on materials and extra reinforcement to hold all the weight of the reloading supplies.<joke>
What are the plans for the wall across from the double doors? The gray on the walls might actually work nicely as a background for a projector. Wouldn't have a great view of the screen while facing the presses, but you probably don't need to be absorbed in guy flick action while loading anyway.
My reloading area is about 25 square feet. You guys with the big rooms must be trying to compensate for something.

Most of the cabinets just placed in the room.

Where is the walk-in gun safe? ;)
Going to be awesome when its done
Wow! That looks great. Keep the pictures coming.
The storage cabs got put in place and doors installed. The last cab on the loading run is in, too.
The tops are 1 1/4" MDF. They'll get stained a darker color then top coated. It's cheap enough I'll just replace it when it gets too ratty looking.

What kind of base trim are you planning?
I cut 5" base trim out of 1/2" mdf today. It's just going to have a chamfer on top to match the countertop edges. The case molding is 3" mdf in 5/8" thick, same detail. It will all get painted, along with the doors, in a muted earthy orange.
Including the tops, I used 39 sheets of material. There are a total of 35 drawers! I may have gotten a little carried away. Fortunately, Hoser and Stu talked me out of even more cabinets along two more walls.
Sounds great, I like tall base trim.

That would so drive me nuts knowing there is still white paint on the walls behind those cabinets.

That's extremely common. Why waste the paint?

Less a statement on construction practices and more a statement on obsessive compulsive types that would want to "fix" it.

Tim, that room looks great! Can't wait to see the final pics

For me it would be my failure to plan that far ahead to know where a cabinet was going to go. So it would have been painted in my house as well.
That should be awesome when it's finished. Plenty of room to do what you want in there.
Where is the cigar/bourbon room?

That's upstairs!
Tim, your floor is making me want to dance. That's EXACTLY what we've been looking for. What did you use, and where did you get it? How expensive was it?
I'm happy for you, getting your own reloading room. That's awesome!
Looks empty without a 1050...
Christmas is coming.
Interested what the AR island will consist of , on a side note happy birthday to your wife, nice present "for her" ha
The floor was some used stuff I picked up from a friend. He has 6,000 sqft. and is selling for $0.75/sqft. I can hook you up if interested.
I mounted the island cabs today and then sanded and varnished the tops. I'll post a pic later.
Can you post up a closer picture of the floor and a shot of an extra piece so I can show my wife, please?
*Assuming that offer isn't just for The Grey.
What a dump. Ikea, right?? [Coffee]
As soon as I saw the title I knew jealousy was only a click away.
Pics of the flooring. It comes with the underlayer. I'll hook up anyone who's interested.

Nice looking rooms!
I'm stuck and I need some help. I can't figure out what to do about the lights. I have a bunch of ceramic single bulb fixtures on the ceiling. I can leave them, but they're ugly. It's also under-lit since I removed the even uglier fluorescents. I'm thinking I'll do some track lighting in a couple of places, but what I'm really after are some fixtures I can use to replace the ceramic fixtures that will put out a lot of light. When I first built this room I had 200W bulbs. They were bright, but expensive to replace. I'd like something more modern like LED if possible. Of course, I'm also out of budget, so cost is an issue.
I need a clever idea. Lay one on me.
LED florescent style lights are pretty cheap and provide a better light quality. It's difficult to explain, but the light quality goes further with LEDs. You ever see people with grow lights that have them right on top of the plant? That's because while the lumen output is high, it degrades wiggly over short distance. The quality light goes "further," imo, than with a regular florescent bulb. I noticed that when replacing a compact florescent bulb with an equally rated LED in my closet, I could see the floor (and how dirty it looked) much better.
I know this all sounds weird out of context, but I believe that in person you'd understand what I meant. Also, while more expensive up front, LED bulbs are stupid cheap to run and extremely durable. I have an LED bulb in a flexible desk lamp on my reloading bench (LED isn't as hot sitting right next to my face for hours), and I use it while working on/under my car. I've knocked this lamp over into the floor, or into the engine bay, probably 30 times now and it has never once broken. Not as big of a deal with a mounted light, but at least you won't be taking any mercury and glass showers if you bump a light with a broom sick or long rifle or something.

I recently upgraded my loading room light fixture to a 15" square LED unit, it was about $40 at home depot and is amazingly bright. Also being LED won't interfere with electronic scales like the charge-master.
Almost forgot, there is a half second delay after flipping switch and lights coming on with LED that is a tad annoying, but again will be much better than flickering florescents. It's only really an issue when you have a lamp built for multi brightness bulbs because you click past your setting thinking the bulb didn't turn on.

LED - 4 ft shop light style at at walmart for $42. I've picked up several now and love the light output. Hopefully they last a long time.
Sams club has them a bit cheaper I believe.

SAMs or Costco has the led fixture lights really cheap. That's what stu got for his room from me just ask him how bright they are.

Put 3 of these in my house and they are bright without the headache. They also make higher lumen output models. Install was easy.
Great input, guys. I put up 6 LED fixtures tonight. Wow. I have space for 7 more. I'll probably do one 4' fixture over the loading area, and maybe 4 more of the square LEDs. It's crazy bright now, but I wouldn't mind just a bit more light.
Over the weekend I put up the base and case molding. Caulked it in Sunday.
I also built a new base for my grinder to match the countertops. OCD is a relentless taskmaster. I hung my compressed air hose reel, as well.
My wife bought me a couple stools, which are pretty nice. I might like two more.
Finally, I moved some speakers and a subwoofer in. I built these a couple years ago purely as an exercise in the woodworkers art. They are a very popular design called the Overnight Sensations. I changed up the cabinet design using transverse laminated curved boxes. I also built a subwoofer to go with them, but I can't recall the name. My pair made the designers website, which I thought was pretty cool. The combination sounds terrific, though the room is too live with all hard surfaces.

Tasks remaining are painting and rehanging the doors to the kids play room, adding the additional lights, adding another vise to one bench, getting a TV on the wall, and then lining the drawers with rubber matting and filling them up.
Here are some photographs.

So, honestly, how do you like the OSMTMs? I have thought off and on about building a couple but I have yet to ever hear them.
Looking great. Love that stool. Need something high like that for my bench.
