Picked up a used sold to my friend at BRAVO Arms and manufactured in late 2010. Looking on gun broker and found two at http://www.gunbroker.com/All/BI.aspx?Keywords=ACOG+TA33R-8 . I have the pelican case and original items to include a never registered product registration card. Since I don't know much about optics I assume that I'm not supposed to see anything in a total pitch black situation? My garage at night for example. However, looking out into the open area and having a light off in the distance I can see the chevron. Does this sound like it should be. I seem to like the fact that I can pick up a EOTEC at the local store and know that when you turn it on there is always has illumination. Anyways, just wanted to share and see if it's supposed to be dark to total darkness without being able to call ACOG on a Sunday. I have $825.00 and know that sounds pretty decent. Glass looks crystal clear in the daylight. My Christmas present to myself and may put it on the HK SL8-6.

Yep the tritium is powered by the light. Can't go wrong with acogs.

Umm. Tritium isn't powered by anything. Tritium just glows by itself. Sort of through radioactive decay.

Meh I just worded it wrong. But anyway good buy!
Acog chevron should be visible in total darkness. I beleive 15 year life is claimed, but anything's possible.
Mine seems to be getting dim, but is still visible in total darkness. They're designed to work with your eyes adjusted to darkness, that take time.

Well, that worried me a bit. Just got it out again and with you saying should be visible in total darkness. Went to my basement and really took my time and with both eyes opened finally seen with proper eye relief that it is visible. It certainly does not glow bright red but for sure can make out the chevron but you will not be making out the 200-400 meter marks. My old eyes makes this a bit dim I would think. Thanks for the inputs. I did find the 15 year life span on the Tritium as well.

12.3 year half life for tritium, meaning it will have lost 50% of its illumination in 12.3 years.

Thanks Burt. I have a long way to go. I tell you what, at 55 years old that chevron is very small on this 3x. I still see clearer without my glasses with this ACOG though.

You should see illumination in total darkness. I have a dual illumination one, and even a distant light source lights it up. I think I need to send mine back to trijicon though as the fiber casing looks like I may have busted it somehow.

The tritium chevron should most definitely be visible in low light. I have noticed that both of my acogs are difficult to see the illuminated portion during dusk... not enough light for the fiber optics to pick up, not dark enough to see the tritium. From what I have heard, Trijicon is very good about replacing expended tritium elements, often for free. In some cases, however, they will send you a bill- after the fact- and sometimes not.
