OK maybe not a grail gun, but it has become a unicorn as of late. Does anyone else have interest in S&W 1006's or is it just me? I know they were not all that popular when they were still being produced. And I think these where the original truck gun because that's what it takes to haul one around. But over the last few years the interest in 10mm has grown and these are brought up as being the one to get for full house loads.

As my 10mm collection grew I have been looking for one of these. It has been a long hunt finding one locally so I could hold before I bought it. They is no reason to even look for a nice one of these on GunBroker the way they are priced, I would never considered bidding. I haven't ever bought much at the local gun shows since 2001 because waiting around and paying for a BGC doesn't appeal to me at all. But Saturday at the Tanner there it was just sitting there on a table calling my name.

It appears to have been fired but I don't believe it was ever carried, it's about 98%. It also came with a S&W box and two factory mags. The box it came with is not period correct but I'm sure that it helped keep it in great shape. These were produced from about 1990 to 1993 and almost 27,000 were made. If anybody here ever knows of the whereabouts of any 10xx S&W mags let me know I'll be looking. I haven't even began to think about a holster either.

I just thought I would put this up for eye candy and see if there's any 10mm love for this beast.

I'm one of the people that doesn't like the early S&W autos. That one is pretty cool though. If I had a 10mm "grail gun" it would probably be the Bren Ten. Mostly for the history and collectibility.

The 10mm has always had kind of a cult following but seems like I'm starting to see more new ones hitting the market lately.

If I stumble across any magazines for that beast I'll pick a couple up for you.

Voss, Thanks for the love, it does show well in person. I'm still shocked that it was that nice and no one else grabbed it. I had to go back Sunday to do the BGC and pick it up. The guy I bought it from said some guy came back to him later on Saturday and was pissed that it was gone. He didn't know why the guy was pissed because he never offered any money to hold it, like I did.

Ray, I know what you mean about the Bren Ten. I have and will always want one of them. Those are the real grail gun. I have heard they are out there if money is no object. Ray you should grab one so I can shoot it and compare, haha! They are very similar in size to the Smiths. I can't even imagine finding parts for it if you break it.

I found a pic of the Bren and Smith together. I would even trade my Delta Elite for one if I had the chance.

If you find 10mm Smith mags for under $40 grab them, the best I've seen is GB for $88.

Be sure to check out the Smith & Wesson forum... Nice looking firearm!! 10mm always intrigued me, but I'm really happy with 357sig.

Wasn't there some company that tried to bring back the Bren10, including plans for a compact version? Some company that started with a V. I think it died before production.

You thinking of VLTOR?

Yeah. The Bren design is kind of a "kiss of death" for any company that tries to produce it.

I like the S&W 10mm as well. Very good accuracy, supremely reliable, flat to carry. I prefer the shorter barrel length of the 1066/1078/1086. Looks like you found one that is in outstanding shape.
Since S&W quit making the 10mm mags, they are in short supply. I feel fortunate that I found some at the most recent Colo Springs gun show. Never hurts to have several spares.
Enjoy your Smith let us know how it shoots.

Nice Smith pistol there. I like the 3rd gen 45s and 9s, have a 4576.

The guy I got this 1006 from also had a 4506 with 3 mags for $550. Not a sure about that price but definitely peaked my interest. I haven't been looking for one so I don't know if that is a good or just average price. It was not in the condition of my 1006. Now that I have a 10xx I may have to look at the 45's.

I was surfing today and found mag bodies and other parts. I ordered two used bodies, two new followers, two new base plates and two Wolf mag springs. So all I'm missing is the metal spring plates that holds the base plate on. Nobody has any in stock, it appears that the 45 plates would also work. Looks like I should have about $65 in each mag.

What year is your 1006, I can look it up if you don't know, I just need the first 3 or 4 characters in the s/n. My 4576 is a 1992 and came in a cardboard box which I have pictured here. The factory plastic bag contains the cleaning rod, brass brush, and mop. The equivalent 10mm to this 4576 is the Model 1076.

My first three characters are TFD. I'm thinking it is early like 1990? I like yours, now I'll be obsessed with getting a 45. I thought that the squared trigger guard, like yours, was only on gen 2's? I have a 669 with that guard and all my gen 3's are round?

You have a Delta Elite too? That was the first gun I ever wanted when I was kid.

I have no experience with 10mm, but I have a kind of repressed lust for a Delta Elite, that I'm sure will never be fulfilled. If I were to get into 10mm it would likely be a Rock Island Armory model. But that's way down the wish list. The caliber intrigues me though. That video of those YouTube yahoos that modded a High Point .40 carbine to shoot 10mm got me to thinking.....

The 3rd Edition of the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson shows: 1989-1990

I bought a great gun at a great price (only in production for 2/3 years), I think it was someone's safe queen, I don't have any safe queens so I shoot it. I just did a little reading on the trigger guard, a number of gen 3s had that guard, S&W appears to have been "flexible" with designs. :)

That's funny. I know who's carpet that is. Used to be pink.

Bren Ten for collectability, S&W if you ever want to shoot it... but you're right - about the heaviest auto short of a desert eagle I can think of.

Anyway, have fun!

I found the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson 3rd edition said 1989 to 1990 for the TFD serial too. The reason I say 1990, everything I read on the 1006 was that they didn't start making them until 1990 and the 10xx series started with serial TEN as the first digits.

I should dig out all of my 10mm's and take a family photo. As of now I have the S&W 1006, a Delta Elite SS and four Glock's, G40 MOS, G20 gen 4, G20 gen 3 and G29 gen 3. I imagine that I will still carry a Glock just from the "who cares if it gets scratched" standpoint. I will definitely be shooting the Smith.

I would love to have a rifle of some type in 10mm. But as of now all I'm aware of is the MechTech. I have heard rumors that Glock kicked around the idea of a 10mm rifle. As you can guess I would be all over a Glock rifle that takes Glock mags.

A blowback 10mm? That takes some balls. Or maybe a general lack of common sense. I might have to check that video out.

Theres a guy down here that shoots a Glock 10mm at the monthy IPSC shoot. Its quite an impressive boom and he shoots pretty well with it.

Big E3, were the mag bodies that you ordered ES or ES1?

Big E3
12-29-2015, 11:14
I don't have them yet. I could not tell from photo. The ones I ordered are the Accu Guide labeled one's and would likely be marked ES1. I don't know what the difference is, everything I have read says they should function fine. They are also marked S&W 10mm.

There are four variations of the Smith 10mm mags.
ES with a beveled yellow follower.
ES with a yellow no bevel follower.
ES 1 with a white follower. The ES 1has a stiffening stamp along the feed lips.
ES 1 with a white follower marked Accu Guide. Those are the latest ones.
I have seen white followers with a groove all the way up the front and others only partially up. I believe the full groove is the latest, but I have to review this more.
I have all the variations.
