View Full Version : 1911 won't eject loaded round cycling by hand

It runs perfectly in every other respect, but when I try to hand cycle it to unload a loaded round the cartridge hangs up in the ejection port and won't eject.

It's a Wilson Combat, 4" bbl.

Common. How long is the ejector? Too long of an ejector will cause loaded rounds to hang up.

Another cure is to grind the fwd edge of the ejection port at 1:30-2:30. You don't have to take off much.

Or, just stop ejecting loaded ammo.

Found the problem ;)

Maybe if you spent more time shooting instead of building a reloading room, that makes hoser's look like a 3rd world bazaar. You wouldn't have these issues.

Very jealous of the new build.

What Hoser said- very common, and is why there is a "lower and flare ejection port" option that gunsmiths have when they work on 1911s.

If you're already seeing it hanging up on the ejection port, you'll see where to grind/file off to flare the port (just take a bit off the inside of the port, leave the outside edge alone)

Shortening the ejector sounds easy. Hose, do they come in standard lengths? Where do I measure?

Yeah, I would think a long ejector from the looks of the pic and that it has been happening from the beginning.

Uhmm, news flash:
The 1911 was never designed to eject a loaded round.
Your looking for a hardware fix for a software problem.

You don't want to dick around with an ejector if you don't know what your doing, get the profile wrong and the brass is in your face.
Try to change an ejector without knowing what your doing and you can cause severe damage to the frame.

Let the machine do what it was designed to do, eject empty brass and quite horseassing around with live rounds.

Thanks for that information, I've learned something today! So what is the proper method of unloading this weapon? Drop the mag, open slide and let the round fall through to the floor? (I've never owned one to observe/learn on)

There are occasions (particularly if you are shooting a competition) where you legitimately need to eject a live round. And in my limited experience, mostly with cheaper 1911s, I've never shot a 1911 that wouldn't correctly eject a live round when you rack the slide. Doesn't seem acceptable.

Tim, are you shooting reloads, or factory rounds? Whats the cartridge OAL?

This is the normal fix.

Just me, but with the cost of a Wilson, I am letting them fix it. I would think they would pay the shipping since you've had the problem from day 1.

Yep. I am surprised that the wilson does not have this cut. Most of the aftermarket slides have it.

Everyone one of mine regardless of caliber ejects a loaded round and damn well it should.
