Police in northern Illinois shot and killed a man suspected of taking photographs of schools while apparently wearing body armor Wednesday morning after a struggle, the Chicago Tribune (http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/lake-county-news-sun/crime/ct-lns-zion-schools-lockdown-shooting-st-0107-20160106-story.html) reported.Officers responded in Zion around 8:30 a.m. after a man was reportedly spotted taking photos of local schools, according to a statement from the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.
“The suspicious person was located by officers and a foot pursuit ensued,” the statement said. “It appeared the offender was wearing body armor. After the foot pursuit, a struggle with the offender and officers ensued, which resulted in the offender being shot.”
Officers at the scene tried to keep him alive, authorities said, and the man was then taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No word yet on if he was actually wearing body armor, or perhaps just had on a backpack with MOLLE loops. The press are idiots, and it sounds like some police are jumpy. Interesting times we live in...

Sheriff's Detective Christopher Covelli said what police initially believed to be body armor was a homemade tactical-style vest with metal inserts. Officers recovered an Airsoft BB gun from the scene of the shooting, an alley behind the 1800 block of Ezekiel Avenue.

Photographers have been known to wear what we refer to as "concealment vests" to carry their equipment, and last I knew, taking pictures of buildings wasn't a capital offense. We don't know enough to know if this guy was a bad actor, or just made bad decisions when he was contacted by the police. Stupid is sometimes fatal, I guess.

When "shall issue" CCW started becoming the law of the land in the late 90's I know a lot of CCW'ers would wear similar vests, to the point where someone started calling them "shoot-me-first vests." :D
