Doing my first build ... Does this look right for the way the hand guard mounts up to the barrel nut? Obviously the top rail is contacting the upper. Do I need to file the top rail of the handguard so that it slides farther down the barrel nut?

I'm assuming you don't have a barrel installed yet and this is just a mock up of the handguard?

Yes, just a mock up no barrel ... Aggg I see what you did there

That's my guess as well. The nut won't go that far back with the barrel in place.

Well that makes perfect sense , can you tell it's my first build ? More stupid questions to come ... Stay tuned

You knew enough to realize something wasn't quite right and came here to ask. I would say you are more competent than you are giving yourself credit for.

Always a smart move to ask questions than to charge blindly forward and screw something up.

MI rails always look a little "gappy" to me, but they are solid. In fact, the MI rail for the Armalite AR-10 requires that you also buy an extended port cover pin since the handguard doesn't sit back far enough to keep the standard pin from walking out.
