View Full Version : Intermediate Gas Length?
While back when at the range shot someones Noveske intermediate gas length 16". I was impressed how smooth, soft it shot. Considering putting a 16" upper together, have a blank contoured. I can't find any barrel specs/drawings on either intermediate gas length, gas port diameter... Anyone have a drawing showing specs?
Thanks.

Intermediate gas length is proprietary to Noveske. You might be able to pick up a gas tube from them. Short of that, I doubt they will cut the specs loose for you to make one. I have one on a Noveske 18" It's longer than mid and shorter than rifle.
It is not proprietary to Noveske at all. The system was designed and used long before. It is not common, however there are companies that make intermediate length systems for 18" barrels and a few less for 16".
Lengths are pistol, carbine, mid, intermediate, rifle and extended.
From Noveske:
Since the development of the 18" SPR barrel, there has not been a proper gas port placement to work with the desirable barrel length. Now there is a perfect combination, introducing the "Intermediate Length" gas system. Developed by Vltor Weapon Systems, and perfected by Noveske Rifleworks, the intermediate length gas system offers the ideal gas port placement, providing maximum accuracy and reliability. Overall, the intermediate length gas system (1.5" shorter then a rifle length) was developed from feedback from end users and industry professionals. Accuracy and reliability are the best characteristics of the intermediate length gas system.

OK, not proprietary. My bad.
MarkCO,
I see you offer a 18" rifle length gas barrel, have you messed with a 18" intermediate?
SA Friday, there's a handful of offerings in 16/18 barrels with intermediate gas systems. Ranier offers a few barrels as well as intermediate gas tubes.
MarkCO might know better the me, KAC might have been the 1st ones to come out with the intermediate length? Found these drawings of the KAC version, supposedly .4 shorter then the Vltor/Noveske.

The 13.625" gas tube length is the common, and if there is such a thing, standard for Intermediate. The 13.125 is going to be a hard tube to find and you will likely have to get one custom made.
I am not sure if KAC, LaRue, Vltor first produced one, all were within a year of each other from what I have heard, but I have not researched it extensively. I first ran one about 10 years ago, but it was a one off on a 17" barrel.
18" intermediate has some advantages, but not for what I do. My 18" barrels (and the Nordic we sell on our website which I designed with Nordic) are intended for competition and with low mass operating systems and with no adjustable gas block. They are very soft shooting. For 16" guns, I have basic purposes and for normal .223 loads I run the Stretch16 melonite barrel, which is an intermediate system. For my super-fast lightweights, I run carbine gas...but I am running a 40 grain bullet at 2200 fps, so it is a very specialized set-up. I just got my Stretch Precision 16" .308 barrel this week, so that is still a work in progress, however my team-mate did a good amount of the T&E on the production proofs for that barrel.
Stretch 16 comes to mind with intermediate gas. 16" barrel with this gas length seems very popular with the 3-Gun crowd. 18" rifle length shoots soft, too.
MarkCO,
using a low mass BCG in the Stretch 16?

Yes, a JP QPQ.
I like 18 and 20 inch barrels with rifle length gas systems.
17 inch barrels with rifle length gas systems can be finicky.
I want mine to run no matter how dirty and I want to be able to find off the shelf parts.

Rock River Arms may have something like what you're looking for on sale. Along with a lot of other stuff....
Rainier Arms has several barrel offerings in Intermediate gas. I've built 3 of their Rock Creek 5R 16" Int gas barrels, and they are smoooooth and shoot like a shark with a friggin' laser on it's head.
