View Full Version : M249 for the masses
It seems FN will be selling a semi-auto version of the M249. I'm not sure what I'd do with it but seems like a cool toy none the less. I'm sure the price will be ridiculous.

That would be fun with one of the binary trigger systems in it.
Well, when I hit the powerball tomorrow I'm buying two of them.
I don't get it. Semi-auto versions of squad assault weapons don't do it for me. Just short of a semi-auto mini-gun [LOL]

AR belt upper with one of these would be pretty wild.

*ahem* securing my place in line.... but when you win an estimated take-home, post-tax jackpot of $450 million, you can probably spring for a class III registered full-auto M249.
Not sure if it was here or somewhere else I saw these before, but I can't see why someone would want a semi auto M249. Same 5.56 round as an AR, not full auto and 3x the weight. Plus, this one is over 3x the cost of a high end AR. The ONLY advantages a SAW has over the M16 is the full auto rate of fire and being belt fed, one of which disappears here. The M60 might weigh a couple pounds more, but at least the pig has the extra firepower of 7.62 mm.

And the pig comes with an asbestos mitten for barrel changes [Coffee]
I don't care how ridiculous it is I want one.

You can order the full auto (open bolt) M249 from FNH.
I believe the price is lower than the semi-auto (closed bolt) gun.
I think they are available thru the Law Enforcement sales program.

I don't know, I think 200 round ammo feeding devices and those hi capacity clipy thingys are not allowed here for that testicular weapon. No fun to shoot without that.

Law Enforcement sales for a SAW? [panic]

Good lord don't get me started. You usually can't import direct from FNH, you have to use a distrib like OMB (at least that's what FN told me), and if you've followed the news they have had some "issues" (as in the main guy is going to prison and the bank took over his company) over the last few years. I ordered a full auto M249 almost two years ago, and the last email I got was "uh, we lost your order in the shuffle and need you to get a fresh letter from the sheriff" (this is now the 3rd version of the letter). Plus you get pushed to the back of the line behind Mil. sales (which of course I'm totally fine with) but they can't even give me an estimate when it'll arrive. They told me that the posties I have on order will just arrive at some point, and I should contact them when they do. LOL.
Yes, the full auto dealer price is a little bit lower than the semi.
CM - if/when it ever comes in you can totally come out and try it out and see if it's worth dealing with.

Not even a chance unfortunately. Our options are limited to buy parts and pieces and fab the receiver - or buy true FN and modify it.

If you've got a law letter, there are a number of sources for post sample converted semis or new post sample builds from FN parts kits. Another dealer buddy of mine got his from DSA for around $5k, though that was like 5 years ago.

Like I said, not a chance unfortunately. Each PD cannot request the same sample over and over again, let alone having a light mg. :(

Doesn't have to be a local PD... My first letter was from 500mi away. And the department can definitely request a demo over and over again. You will however have a problem if ATF shows they already own one in the registry.
That sure would be fun......
If we could get the magazines for it [Rant1]

Should work fine with those normal pmags you bought a few years ago...
