View Full Version : Iran detention of US Sailors

I couldn't find a thread on this subject yet.

I think you all know the headline by now. The sailors have been released, thankfully. However, I have to ask, how the hell did this happen?

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2016/01/13/iran-claims-10-u-s-sailors-have-been-released-one-day-after-being-detained/

From these Iranian state media pictures, it looks like we had two Riverine Command Boats (or similar) captured by a bunch of Iranian center console fishing boats??? I know the US media reports are the sailors had mechanical issues, but on both boats at the same time? What are the odds of that? Reports are we got the boats back and they continued on their missions with new crews, so the mechanical issues couldn’t have been that serious. And if they weren’t that serious, why in the world would two of our baddass boats surrender to lame little Iranian boats? What up with that?

Super glad we got our guys and gal back ok. I don’t envy them while they get “debriefed” about this situation.

I'm guessing there were very tight ROE. Don't need to be starting a shooting war by accident.

USN just living up to their motto "join the Navy and see the world" now includes Iran [Sarcasm2]

We'll never know the truth, but here's my take. I don't think our sailors had mechanical issues nor did they drift off course. Those boats travel in pairs for a reason. And I'm sure they have the best nav available. Had a boat broken down, the other would have towed it long before they "drifted" into Iranian waters.

I think our sailors were attacked by Iran. And WE apologized.

It just makes no sense.

Not a bad theory, definitely something fishy going on, and I'm not even a tin foil type.

Easy for me to say, as I sit on my comfy couch at home, but if the integrity of ALL crew members will come thru, hopefully the correct account of the incident will come to surface.

Things don't add up. I do have to wonder if Iran has something to confuse the GPS on our boats or disable the equipment. They took over a drone a couple of years ago and forced it to land there. Also, why are US troops just up and surrendering to approaching boats? Those .50 cals would have turned the fishing boats into a new spot for coral to grow. Even putting a few warning shots into the water would have made the Iranians think twice about going any further.

We were told to stand down.

No, no one said to stand down.

Yes they did, twice.

No, you are mistaken, no one would say that.

Well they did say that.

No, it was a video.

Is this outcome not better than war?
It is, but implying that war is the only other possible outcome is a huge assumption.

Perhaps another possble outcome to a situation like this would be our sailors defend themselves and their equipement, our government supports them and insists that they were attacked by Iran and then America demands an appology from THEM.

You are thinking too thin on this, think deeper. The images of U.S. sailors on their knees, hands on their heads, surrendering to the Iranians are very powerful tools of propaganda for our enemies and perspective enemies.

I suppose. If things keep going down that path, then one day some Iranians will be in for a disappointing shock when we stop laying down and forget to tell Iran about it.

This administration is a complete failure. What they should have done immediately after getting our sailors back is identify and sink every single Iranian vessel involved. Unfortunately obama can't do that to his Iranian allies.

Exactly right.

We're already at war with Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, anyplace where Islam is the government, the United States may not recognize the state of war but Islam certainly does.

Bracken nails it. The only thing I don't like is you have to go to about 10 different places to read all of his posts that stitch all the details together.

Iranians having an English speaker, on a patrol, with backup nearby, to intercept two Riverine boats having mechanical difficulties before they could radio/receive help (jammed comms?). Perfectly reasonable story. Huge feat for such a capable navy...

I'm not buying one word of the official story but I never have when it comes out of this administration. If I ever came across the former admiral who is now the State Department's spokesman, the only thing I could bring myself to say to him would be ask how the hell he shaved in the morning with the utter s--t he peddles.

Yup, just waiting for the right moment. Before Iran gets nukes. Before the settlement of refugeehadists in the US and the fall of Europe. Before the election of Hillary Clinton. Before an attempted mass disarmament of the American people.

Timing is critical.

Iran says they pulled data from laptops and cell phones in addition to the 2 sat phone SIM cards they kept. Plus they claim to have footage of a sailor trying to apologize for their actions. Wonder if Kerry will address this.

I've seen the video of the leader of the boat mission saying, while in custody, they screwed up and it was their fault.
