View Full Version : Powder choice for 40s&w?

I've got CFE Pistol, Bullseye, and Titegroup powders on hand that I use to load 9 and 45, and want to work up some loads for 40s&w now.
Any suggestions on which would be best of these 3 for the 40? I'm leaning toward the bullseye, but don't really have a solid reason why.
I'd look in my manual and see which had the highest velocity with the lowest pressure with the weight of bullet I intended to use.
I use AA#5 for 40. I've been recommended to use Titegroup but haven't tried it yet. Extremely helpful post, I know.

CFE Pistol has a burn rate that is pretty close to AA5, both bullseye and titegroup are much faster.
For highest velocity with the lowest pressure, it looks like CFE would be the best of the 3 (with limited data available to compare)
So it's looks like I'll start with CFE Pistol. Once I find a load I like with the CFE, I'll do a workup with the bullseye to compare.

Depends what you are trying to do...
Max velocity use the CFE as it has a slower burn rate. It is close to say HS-6 or WAC in terms of performance.
For "target" stuff I use both BE and TG. The TG is cleaner but burns hot and is very dense so you thrower (if you use a disk type) might not give you much range to play with. It uses surprisingly little by volume so be careful with this stuff. Shoots well.
The bullseye is a little dirty but it works really well, my favorite powder.
I shoot powder coated lead 180gr most of the time.

Sport, ty for the info. I've reloaded with titegroup before when I was using the adjustable charge bar. I'm now using the lee auto drum measure, which has been much easier to adjust for exact charges.
