Homicides in Denver hit 9-year high with 50 people killed in 2015

http://extras.denverpost.com/homicides/2015/

The "high" is 50 for 2015 which puts the city/county at the 2006 level (51). Typical statistics provided by race, gang, and cause (37 by firearms). In 22 of the cases no arrest has been made (44%). Still a long way to go to the 90s and whatever happened in 2004 that caused it to spike to 87.

No comment section for me to point out the 2013 gun laws, with selective LE presence/enforcement, are making a difference.

So, our black community has a gang violence problem. How does legislation against law abiding citizens fix this problem? Sounds like common sense gang legislation would be more productive.

So do you starch that white hood or just press it?

Must be the legalization of marijuana. Guess we'll have to repeal that. Even if it saves just one life.

Not a racist comment when gang attributed murders are 46% of the total count

Actually yes it was. It does not state that one minority homicide rate is higher than the other. If you read the list, you're hard pressed to say black or brown on a lot of them. Gang related yes... One color no. Still a racist fucking comment

The race stats are in the story which also mentions Denver's gang problem. Gang related homicides make up 23 of the 50, so nearly half like Funky said. I don't know how they made that determination because "snitches get stiches" and such.

By race (from the story)...

28 (56%) Black
12 (24%) Hispanic
10 (20%) White

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Denver

Population of Denver: ~650K

65% White
31% Hispanic (overlapping)
11% Black

Rates, derived by population, per 100,000...

2.367 White
5.955 Hispanic
39.161 Black

Hispanic rate is 2.5x higher than White (overlapping population numbers increase the denominator, lowering this rate)
Black rate is 16.5x higher than White, 6.5x higher than Hispanic.

My numbers could be off and so could my sources. So assume some error that probably doesn't change the overall discrepancies.

If people (Liberals, politicians, Demanding Mothers, etc...) were genuinely concerned about violence (gun or otherwise) this would be examined. My personal belief is that this has to do with culture and values than race. But that examination is often called "racist" as well because the culture identifies along racial boundaries (which is actually racist but seldom is that mentioned).

Saddest thing in this story is a couple of the names on the list...

Javion Johnson, 1
Karla Garcia, 1

So we can't talk about this because "racist?"

I was not trying to be racist. Sorry if it came across that way. A part of "our" community has a statically higher than average problem with crime and violence. What is being done to stem this tide?

So those high capacity clip bans are working. It would be so much higher if the wizards of smart hadn't passed those "sensible gun laws".

That's a given. Even more so when (if one has the homepage set to yahoo) evey 3rd byline is another GUN VIOLENCE, CONTROL, First person stories. Of course with out fail. Everyone of them has the usual (SURPRISE) WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT guns. Never a mention how said killers get them (other than Lax access to internet gun [facepalm]) With of course the usual. No one want's To Take away Your Gun, right now.

Well, you know, we should be just about out of those high capacity clips because y'know, they can't be reused ... DeGette said so!

The obvious solution is to not allow any guns in Denver. Not even the police should have them because we know that they would just be stolen anyway and used against them. I mean are we not told that if we carry a gun it will just be stolen from and used to shoot us. They said so at the hearings in 2013, right? And if no one has a clipy bullet holder anymore then that stolen gun could not be reloaded. Heck, problem solved with minimum common sense. That was easy.

Make me kin .. dicta ... Boss and I will solve all your problems.

So with a population of 649,495 according to Google that makes it .00008% murder rate for Denver........ And this is bad? Apparently, we need to do more to cut down on guns, which are only a percentage of the total weapons of choice. Yup, sounds about right.

I agree the overall number/rate is low and they are somewhat honest in comparing that to other cities for contrast. But it is a near doubling of the low we had in 2010. What changed in five years?

Whitewashing where violence (in general) occurs. Ignoring/ Denying the attacks in LoDo were gang and or racially motivated.

Lax sentencing and or plea bargains. Failing to slam a habitual offender with the federal charge of firearm possession.

An overall head in the sand attitude of the political hacks. Who would rather push an agenda of GUNS are Bad. Instead of addressing the real issue, criminals are going to be criminals. No matter how unicorn & puppies you try to paint it.
