So.... after receiving your tax stamp- does an SBR owner have to have the lower engraved BEFORE assembling the gun or is there some kind of grace period?

I would think you would have to before building it out. Don't quote me on this.. if it's not built it's just a piece of metal.. once it's capable of being attached to an upper it is now the device you created.

I always get mine engraved and built out when the stamp arrives.. but that's probably just the kid in me.

i engrave my NFA F1's when i have the time and the engraver is open. It's approved, serial # matches , it works for me. I do not engrave anything until i have the paperwork back and everything checks out, again.
It took the atf 3-6 months to give me an approval. The engraving can wait a few days

That's my point. I've got the paper, the stamp, the complete lower and access to the complete upper when I'm ready. Should I be afraid to assemble it prior to the visit to the engraver. Got the stamp today......want to plug and play, but.......

You can but you have to be present during the engraving. (You cannot leave the firearm over night or for a few days)

Engrave it before you assemble if you want to be legal.

Also, as mentioned above, I'd go back and double check given the new laws, but leaving a standard lower with your engraver for a few hours or even overnight usually doesn't qualify as a transfer. Most engravers won't let you leave though if it's an NFA weapon, regardless of legal standing. Troy came running out the door pretty fast after me when I walked out of his place and left a machine gun lower sitting there on his desk. LOL.

HOWEVER, if you bring your trust and put him on it. He can be in possession without you there.

To add someone to a trust containing firearms in Colorado requires a BGC, 4473 and an acquisition statement, just so you know.

My $0.02 on the original question:

I assemble a lower in a legal configuration (long barrel or pistol tube), test fire it and once satisfied with its functioning, engrave it. If the engraving comes back correct, THEN I file the form 1.

Because now that you have a form 1 back, if the engraving is botched (misspelling, whatever) is has to be engraved again yielding a crappy looking lower that you HAVE to use if you want an SBR.

I read 'somewhere' that you do have a grace period on when to get the engraving done. Something along the lines of a 'reasonable time.' As Kazoo said, when my schedule meets up withe engraver, I get it done.

Engrave-Cave LLC is an SOT as well, so if you don't have time we can receive and ship back to you or drop off and pick up.

I would probably have known that if I ever get off my butt and call you.

They need a copy of the stamp to leave it correct?

Do you seriously care if your gun is pretty?

I used Troy at Colorado Gunwrites. He did an awesome job on my SBR. I had it engraved the day after I got the Form 1 back.

Troy has some "industrial strength" cold anodizing solution. Never saw what he was using. Last time I was there, he snuck into the garage and came back with it blacked.

You could use Birchwood Casey aluminum black in a pinch. Neither is going to reproduce a real hard anodizing, but should blacken it enough and provide some protection over raw aluminum.

He did mine in his kitchen right in front of me . . . but I was petting his dog and not paying much attention to what he was using.

^^^Yes. I watched him use it right in front of me. Pretty impressive stuff. Once my form 1 comes back for my suppressor, I'll be taking it to him. Very reasonable cost and does top shelf work.

Interesting how a law, that can have incredible consequences for not complying, can be interpreted differently. Crazy ass legal mumbo jumbo.
