I'm thinking of picking up my first AK and was hoping you could suggest a good start for me. Any chance there's a good left-handed AK out there?
There was one for sale here but I think he marked it sold pending funds

I doubt you'll end up with a left handed model. They are few and far between and are custom pieces. Although, I believe there was a Polish model if some sort that had some sort of ambidextrous safety on it.
Knowing what your budget is might help on recommending something.

I don't need a lefty if they call for a premium. Just looking for an entry level AK so I can get used to the platform. Probably look to sell my SKS sporter I picked up from KevDen a few years back.
Well, based off of their general polarity, I would probably look for a WASR. Affordable, fairly easy to come by, and, if the AK platform turns out not to be your thing, should be easy to sell.

How much is your budget? That's where you really need to start. The days of $2-300 AK's are long gone. The average price is $450+ used $6-1200 new, depending on mfg, quality , etc .

You can still get some decent deals if you're patient or lucky. I recently picked up a like-new Romanian for $350 out the door.

I'd love to find a clean Norinco some day. Had two of them back in the mid 90's. Kind of wish I would have kept one of them.
Polish tantal is the one with the safety ray referred to

I'm thinking I can sell my SKS sporter for $400-$500 and throw in about $300 cash.

Not a big thing. It was through a private party. He was needing some cash to fund another firearm purchase and I happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Always pays to have cash in your wallet if you ever find yourself in a similar situation.

Price it @ $400 and see what interest it gets. $500 ?? You're looking for a moderately priced AK, like a few hundred others. Would you drop $500 on a SKS when another $1-150 puts you in to an AK?

Try beating him up for $50 less you split transfer fees. That is a good deal on a Yugo. I know where a side scope mount and optic are for it, hint.

I just shot him a text offering $475 and we split the fees. I'll let you know what he says.

I'll drop you a line after Tuesday about the side scope mount and optic
Seems like a decent price for one of the ones that take the AK magazines.

Clean unit. Put it on armslist for $575. Let someone beat you up for $75. They cover all fees. It either sells or it doesn't. I'd keep it myself.
When the panic hits, After Doomberg announces his presidential run as a 3rd party candidate. BB guns will be going for $200+ Then put it up for sale.
Include a 40oz soda in lieu of the 30 rd mags, you can't sell with it.

Great advice ;)
Can anyone tell me what type of muzzle break is on this rifle and thoughts on if it can be removed 636316363263633

Simple twist off. You have to remove the cleaning rod, that's what "locks" it in place. The more shit you pile on the more "TACTICAL" it looks. The down side is when one of our Armslist commandos, links your ad back here to make fun of.
If the OP hasn't found one yet, there are quite a few decent ones listed on Armslist right now.

I thought I only had 1 mag but found 2 I picked up from Beast and 2 Tapco's I picked up at a Tanner before the ban. All the metal AK mags work fine but the Tapco plastic mags don't fit.
Anybody know if Magpul AK mags work in SKS sporters?
If i remember right sks d models have a tighter magwell. Most of the plastic mags will need fitting. The pmags are easily fitted

Dumb question but what do you mean by "need fitting" is that a modification to the rifle or the magazine or both?

Check to see if the tapco fitment is from the rear locking lug, or on the sides. Either one is easy to adjust for correct fit. I'm probably in the minority, but really like the tapco Ak mags.

Usually you'd modify the mags but it can be a rifle issue. With the surplus mags fitting I'd say its the mags. A sander can take down the sides. Try to do it evenly. Counting the number of seconds and matching that on the opposite side. Usually the locking tab needs tinkered with too.

Thank you all for your great advice. I picked up the rifle Gunner posted on a prior page for $500 with 2 magazines and sold my SKS for $475 at Gander Mountain at the same time. I win!!!!
Side note: He showed up with a Magpul magazine and it worked. The same Tapco mags that didn't fit my SKS fit the AK just fine.

Before taking it out to the range I field stripped it, everything appeared to be in working order. Went to the range yesterday. Loaded a magazine, chambered a round, pulled the trigger and there was a pause and then bang. Something didn't feel right, I took out the magazine, emptied the chamber and the trigger had nearly fallen out. I took it apart and discovered that I have what appears to be a faulty spring that should hold the pin in place. Fixing it is beyond my understanding of this platform. Anyone in the Boulder/Longmont area care to give it the once over before I bring to the armorer at Boulder Gun Sport or Pri-Paird?

thinking this might solve my problem http://ak-builder.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=29836 thoughts?
Yes it will. Much simpler to take one of your pins to ace and get a pair of hitch pin clips though. They also don't disassemble if you remove the safety like the plate does. The spring you're referring to is the Shepards hook.
No need to take it to an armorer.

5mm e-clips from any hardware store, to get you on the road. Until you can get one of those 1 pc retainer plates.
