I have been considering a .300 blackout build. It is something I have wanted to do for a long time. I have been going back and forth with the decision mainly because I have an ar10. I am think of building a pistol until I get a tax stamp to make it a sbr. I was also considering just doing a 16" barrel and use it for deer hunting, I just don't know how well the round will perform. Please help either talk me into it or out of it.

You can always do a pistol and then convert it to an SBR. Change the tube and stock when the stamp comes in. Since you already have an AR-10, not making a 16" isn't that big of a deal. You can always make a 16" upper and use it on the SBR lower later.

Is it a good round for deer?

Is it a good round for deer?
They use it for white tail deer and hogs all over in the USA. It's 7.62x35 so very close to 7.62x39 or 30-30. Lot of deer taken with 30-30 over the years.

wouldnt be my first choice for deer in all honesty.
its a really good round for subsonic use with the gas port in the pistol location, but beyond that the grendel case runs circles around the blk.

I'm just getting back into hunting. I went a lot until I was fifteen haven't went in along time. wanted to use my ar15, I figured even if I swap the barrel on my current AR I can do .300 blackout. I have an old 30-30 it's a Marlin 336 great rifle. Just wanted to try something different.
^^^^Just build a bare bones, blem upper with a barrel and generic handguard. You can swap your BCG and CH from your .223/5.56 upper. Palmetto State sells a complete upper for almost nothing, too.

I'm building a pistol in 300 black right now for the exact same purpose. I am going to transform it into an SBR when the tax stamp comes back. PSA has some great deals on 300 uppers right now. I just got an 8.5" 300 blackout complete upper with hand guard for a very good price three days ago.

300 blackout is the main caliber we use to shoot deer at our place. I either use the tnt 125gr bullet (solid copper, etched so it breaks apart on impact) or the Tac TX black tips. We load to about 2250 fps which gets you around 1200 ft lbs of energy. Cleared all the load data with our game wardens for our unit. Works really well, most deer only make it about 20 yards. We have people use ours when they hunt here so we don't have any ricochets. Still is a through and through, but dumps most energy into the deer. No recoil and sub moa at least to 150 yards which most of our shots are, um, 30-50 yards...[facepalm] Hunting up in the mountains would be different, I would probably opt for more range and power than the blackout.
Like SAFriday said, almost the same ballistics as a 30-30. I think I saw a stat (could just be bullshit) that 30-30's have killed more deer than all other calibers combined. Could be cause they been around forever. Plus none of my 30-30's are threaded for cans.[LOL]
Also for Colorado a pistol is ok to use for hunting, but not an sbr. Can't use a full auto trigger either, WTF? I have asked both questions to the wardens. Suppressors also are OK for hunting in CO.
