You have to beat the CMP forum regulars with the deep pockets first. I gar-on-tee there's already a line as deep as a ticket line for a Led Zeppelin reunion concert. Got a better chance of winning the Powerball.

Well I paid an embarrassing amount of money to send four pieces of paper to Anniston. I'll post back with whatever happens. I went Service Grade only (no second choice).

They are imposing a one carbine limit per customer/year. So maybe that will cut down on the shenanigans?

Off to buy a Powerball ticket...

Only M1 carbine I'm interested in is the one my Grandfather had (he carried one in WWII), but I don't think my Father will give it up... it took him around 15years to get it back from his younger brother after loaning it to him for "a week or so".

I've wanted to see it, but think it's in poor taste to ask to see it... he'll bring it up whenever he's ready.

Wow, whatcha afraid of? If my dad had owned one, I'da damn sure been checking it out. It's not like you're asking to drink Miller Lite out of The Holy Grail.....

I bought my Dad an M1 Carbine several years ago. He was issued one in 1944, used it to guard German POW's at Camp Wolters texas. He got me hooked on them years ago, my only complaint was that at 80 years old he consistently out shot me :) Pretty cool actually.

Shortly before his death two weeks ago (at 89-1/2) he called me aside and wanted to make sure I ended up with his guns, including the M1 Carbine.

I appreciate the post, I printed the paperwork, went to the bank for the notary and mailed the paperwork next day air so it will be there on Monday. I know it's a long shot but it's worth a try! I hope to get another one!

You guys know the forums over at the CMP have carbines for sale all the time, right? Most probably come with the original CMP certificate.

Yes and nearly everywhere you look (shows, GB, CMP forum, Armslist) you will pay a premium above what the CMP is asking for the same gun/condition. Anything of collector value is even worse. The CMP forum seems to more reasonable when something does come up but you will still find mix-master service grade M1s going for $1,000+ when they can be had direct from the CMP for $795.

Funny- I looked and all I saw was a section for selling and finding parts.... not complete guns.

I sent my paperwork in on Friday by priority mail so it should have arrived there today. With only one purchase allowed per person per year, I think I have a good chance, requested service grade. I guess we should all know in a couple weeks or so how it works out.

Just got an email update...

M1 Carbines will be released in our stores in Anniston, Alabama, and Port Clinton, Ohio, on
Thursday, February 4. Since our mail orders sold out in one day, we
thought it would be wise to notify our store customers that there will be
less than 35 full M1 Carbines in each store. This is the extremely limited
quantity referenced in our previous email. They will be sold on a first
come, first serve basis.

It's going to be like Black Friday. I bet they are already lining up.

I've been checking the CMP forum thread and the speculation is that this will take several weeks to start seeing processing updates. The only people who have received updates/confirmations are the ones who had other items on their order.

It took about that long to know if folks got an IHC Garand last year.

ETA: There's one poster who says he got an update.

Email confirms have starting being received in earnest according to the CMP thread. Sometimes the estore is showing an order, so folks are checking online. One post said they have six employees working on the carbine orders.

If you hear anything, post an update!

Luck of the draw but it is a service grade so it should be in decent condition judging from service grade M1 Garands I have seen. I am certainly not expecting a new carbine, just one that is all there and works at the range. As soon as I received my notification I ordered up some ammo and sling/oiler for it. I will hold out heading for work in the morning until the last possible moment, other wise I will have to wait until I get home from work. It will be a long day at work.

Scratches, scars, dents, chips, rust, finish wear, that's all character! A 70+ year old combat weapon should have a little "patina" to it, after all, yes? As long as it functions well, you'll love that little rifle like a speckled flop-eared pup with two different colored eyes!

OK, here she is:
Underwood
Barrel date 10-43 Underwood
Bavaria Municipal Police on the receiver
Muzzle gauges 1+
Throat Gauges 2

I will need to strip it down and give it a good cleaning and lube job, there are no cracks in the stock, metal in is pretty darn good condition, overall I'm pretty happy with what I received from the CMP.
I have ordered three 15 round ProMag magazines for it along with a reproduction sling, oiler and buttstock ammo pouch. Good thing I didn't order a bayonet as this one doesn't have the facility for mounting one. I have 500 rounds of ammo on the way from the CMP as well. Hopefully all the goodies will arrive by week end so i can go shooting this Sunday or Monday.

I think she's beautiful and the price can't be beat! Pics of the box remind me of the excitement most of us have felt.

The CMP forum members are getting a lot of Bavarian returns. Wonder if that's the source of the 2,000?

As you may know the Bavarian's are the best of the bunch and some of the most desirable. You are very lucky to have scored one. The pictures are good, but I'd love to see a photo of the Bavarian markings. Congratulations!

My camera does not take great photos but for $60 new I can't complain too much. Here are some more pic's.

Nope, no magazines with it. I found ProMag 15 round blued steel magazines at Cheaperthandirt.com way less expensive than anywhere else. Most of the surplus mag's were double the price and usually had rust on them. Over time I will pick up a few surplus mag's when I find nice ones at a reasonable price.

The wife just called and told me my magazines have been delivered. If the CMP is on the job I should have the ammo by Friday.

Gunner, You've had better luck than me. I bought a few from him just for fun. They had gotten wet at some point in their history. Mine were rusted and pitted up bad. They were nasty, but they did work.
CMP forum mags are pricy and seem to run $25.00-$35.00 a piece.

Glad I picked up a shitload of USGI mags over the years from private sellers, got a respectable stash of them. Same with Garand enblocs, have a metric assload of those and bandoliers. What the hell is wrong with me.....

My daughter and I went out to Baker Draw this morning and did a little target practice and I ran some rounds through my M1 Carbine. After checking function with 5 rounds through each of the three magazines I sighted in close in at 10 paces and it was low and right so I corrected and moved out to 25 paces and fired 30 rounds. Elevation was good but still right, another correction and moved the target to 35 paces for another 30 rounds. Looked pretty good so I pushed back to 40 paces and fired 45 rounds. All of this was from a bench but no rest, I just leaned on the bench with my elbows to brace me. The trigger has A LOT of creep but the break is crisp and I just worked on being smooth let it surprise me. It was a little windy coming out of the north west.

I like this little gun. Very little recoil and more accurate than I am, this one is a keeper. I'm a lucky guy.

Well I FINALLY got the bad news yesterday via email from the CMP that I missed the boat. Email says they had 8,000 orders which is a bit different from the 5,000 that supposedly came in on 2/01.

So now I have to decide if I want to pay the premium on the open market just to get one. This deal seems to be signaling that the supply isn't meeting demand.
