Excerpt:
"So, when do you need to engrave your Form 1’ed SBR? The answer: when you intend to sell it. Engraving requirements apply to firearms that are intended for sale in interstate commerce, so when you go to sell your gun you’re going to need to have it engraved."
O2
If you manufacture a NFA device from an existing firearm, according to the ATF you DO NOT need to immediately engrave your information into the firearm. Much like how firearms manufactured from a 80% lower receiver don’t require engraving upon completion, the ATF believes that the mere act of manufacture of an exiting NFA device doesn’t require additional engraving. The existing serial number is sufficient for identification.
Show me the ATF policy letter.
NFA is not a good place to play in the grey areas.

Come on. What's the worst that could happen? Big fines, prison time, and never being allowed to own a firearm for the rest of your life?
Yeah, I see his point, but Nick Leghorn of all people is not someone I'd go to for legal advice.

His opinion on the matter is incorrect and could lead to a world of trouble if somebody follows it.

That's where most of us are headed anyways.. Why not just shorten the time line?

It seems like this would also apply to finishing 80% lowers, even if they are not NFA items. Does anyone have an opinion on that?

Unless you have an emergency, needing to sell what ever you have to cover cost. Why would one even consider putting anything on a 80% lower. There's a reason (or so i read, on line) why people buy them.
Perhaps you should write a letter of clarification to the ATF, if it's a concern.

In other words, TTAG is full of manure yet again. Friends don't let friends read TTAG.
