ok, we don't see enough builds documented here that involve 'smithing', so I thought I'd start one...

a few years ago, I saw a sale on Caspian/Foster Double-stack frames during the SHOT show that I couldn't resist.. (the frame(s) I bought are labelled Foster, and I see why- but it doesn't affect integrity, and won't be visible in final build)

Before anyone asks, I bought the frame BEFORE the mag ban, and bought a number of 38Super mags before the deadline from Brownells... anticipating a build on the frame I owned. So this is all 100% legal with Colorado and Federal laws.

Lately I've been thinking of a Longslide 10mm... and thought this Caspian DS frame would be a good platform to build on.
I started shopping, and I know the prices I'm looking at for a longslide build. Then I came across a smoking deal on a RIA 10mm upper (complete, with clark/Para/Lissner barrel).

I know it's not a longslide, but this was too low to pass up...
Never mind the single-stack mag (unless you want to buy it, I won't be using it)
I'll be building this to take it:
https://www.caspianarms.com/receiver/double-stack-receiver-kit-carbon

I have been building the parts list, and this isn't my first 1911 build... (but my first double stack)
I have to buy the grips & mainspring housing from Caspian, but other double-stack specific parts are cheaper through Brownells (maybe I'll call Caspian and see if they'll offer a deal...) I need a complete frame pin/spring/parts kit... many are standard 1911... but I know Caspian parts are very high quality. Considering getting the trigger group from them just for consistency.

Once I get the slide in hand (expected early next week), I'll post more pics of the project (frame is currently cut for non-ramped barrel).
I have a small mill, and 3/8" endmill- but a 9mm endmill may be better for making a Clark/Para cut in the frame.

I don't think I would build a 10mm on a cast frame.

Neat project. Caspian frames are well made.

I don't think I would build a 10mm on a cast frame.

And I wouldn't build one on just any cast frame (like an RIA?)- but Caspian has a solid rep on .38Super from their Gen1 frame (and this is the improved version)... I also wouldn't risk it on a frame I paid $500+ retail in a kit- but I have around $100 in this frame (probably $250 with the high-cap specific parts from Caspian/Brownells), so I'm fine with risking it... I'll keep an eye out for cracks- but there have been others that have built 10mm on Caspian frames (both single and double stack), I believe it will hold up fine.

I didn't come to this decision lightly, I did research... and I already built a single-stack Caspian frame in .45, and am pounding it with +P loads... so far no issues, maybe I'll turn up the heat on my reloads...

ETA: That mean you won't help me if I get stuck, Bert?

Cool, I'll keep an eye on this. I picked up an STI double stack frame recently to build a 9mm 1911.

In my limited recent home built 1911's I had great results with a Caspian and STI fire control parts. I have chicken finger.

Same here, but I picked up a handful of 80% 2011 doublestack frames to build. The plan is 9mm for me as well.
