View Full Version : My Dad and WWII- may he rest in peace
My Dad passed away Jan 14th, 2016 and was buried at Ft. Logan a week ago Friday. He was stationed at Camp Wolters (not Walters) near Mineral Wells, Texas. He was an MP and guarded German POW's.
Below is a picture that one of the prisoners drew of my Dad and presented to him in 1945. He kept it for over 70 years and to this day it is hanging in his office at home.
May my Dad rest in peace.

RIP warrior.
My dad was at Camp Swift in TX doing the same thing and then he saw a 10th Mountain recruitment poster.
10 days later he was on a train headed to Carson.
Condolence on the loss of your father.

Condolences to you on your loss. The ranks of those WWII heroes are rapidly diminishing. My Dad was a B17 pilot who spent the last three months of the war in Europe in a German POW camp after being shot down. Never flew an airplane again in his life.

I feel your loss. My father served in the Free Polish army and was in a POW camp towards the end of the war
Many lessons I learned from him that I am gratefull for and try to teach my own children.
May he rest wel and my condolances to all thet knew him.
So sorry for your loss. They were indeed the Greatest Generation.
The greatest generation is departing one by one, and the "by law everyone should be equal" generation is taking its place.
I'm sorry for your loss.

Condolences, to you and your family.
Our dad served in Korea. For what memory he still retains, don't ask him how he feels about Truman pulling MacArthur from Korea.

My sincerest condolences. Both sides of my family didn't serve in WWII due to farmer deferments. I never got a chance to ask either of my grandfathers about it and how they felt concerning it.
My deepest condolences to you and your family. Your dad was a real hero! And that drawing- what an incredible memento. He must have made a big impression.

Condolences from my family to yours. I really enjoyed the photo of the drawing. I'm sure your dad treasured that for all his days. Maybe he and the POW are reunited in a better place.
So sorry for your loss. What a great picture to have though. Definitely an amazing story. God bless you and your family.
I'm sorry to hear your dad passed away. Sounds like he was a good man and a true patriot.
Great history on that portrait. RIP.
Your father like many others during that time will always have my gratitude beyond words. I will keep you and yours in my prayers tonight, condolences to you and your family as well!

Sorry for your loss, truly the greatest generation. The WWII vets are a vanishing national treasure. My dad transported German prisoners in Italy. I have a wooden box that the prisoners built, painted and hand lettered that he sent home to my grandma from Leghorn Italy. Treasure that picture, it is priceless, because of the story it tells.
I just got back tonight from taking my dad and mom out to dinner for my dad's 89th birthday. I'm the luckiest man in the world that they are still alive and able to live on there own in the house that I helped him build 45 years ago when I was 15.
Again I'm very sorry for your loss. We will likely never know men like that again.
This is that box.

Sorry for your loss
My grandfather grew up in mineral wells and they were around the same age so who knows they might have known each other in passing. I lost him just over a month ago and already feel how heavy of a loss the departing of the greatest generations impact will have on this world.

Condolences to his family and friends, his truly was the greatest generation! We should feel honored to have had parents from that era.
My Dad and four of his brothers were in the Navy in WW2, the sixth brother (who couldn't swim), joined the AAF and was a gunner on a B-24 flying missions over the channel which scared him more than the enemy!
They all made it, great guys, all gone now. I wish I had talked to them more about their experiences, none of them really brought it up or bragged about what they did. I'll never forget going to the VFW with Dad as a kid and the smell of smokes, beer and good eats. Bless them all.
My deepest condolensces. He had a long life that's for sure. My dad was 3rd Army, 301st Signal Corp, he passed in early '92.
