Generally I don't like to see people arrested for accidents where no one is harmed, but his actions were negligent and I don't feel the arrest was out of line.

Shouldn't be scared, should be treating it like it was loaded with the exception being how you define the "safe direction". I do a function check after cleaning that frequently includes dry-firing. I don't do this at the range but I DO make sure there's nothing in the chamber and nothing in the magazine (or cylinder) and even then I make sure that I'm pointing it in a direction where no one would be harmed if somehow it DID go off.

I guess scared wasn't the right word. Uneasy is a better choice. I pull the mag (if one was in), rack the slide 4-5 times, lock it back, finger check the cylinder, etc. And yes, I point it in a safe direction and all that. Just always that "what if" thought. I never want to be that guy.

Whenever I carry at the movies, I'm so nervous about having an AD, that I'm always sticking my hand in my pocket and dry firing to make sure the gun isn't chambered.

Method for making unfamiliar weapons safe.
Pointed in a safe direction and keeping your finger off of the trigger, remove the source of ammunition. Once the source of ammunition has been removed, cycle the action of the weapon to ensure there are no rounds present. If possible lock the action open. A cheap plastic ballpoint pen in the ejection port, allowing the slide to partially close on the pen functions as a safe chamber indicator.
