View Full Version : A good hand primer?

I've been using the hand priming system that came with my RCBS press and it is okay at best. The ram falls out of the handle fairly regularly and can be a PITA to get back in place, it binds up often (which leads to the ram falling out when I try to wiggle it back in place), etc. I'm ready to punt and find a new/better brand/system if anyone has any advice...
I have a Lee which is fine, but I use my RCBS universal more often. Its nice not needing individual shell holder for each caliber.

This is probably a little bulkier than you had in mind. But it works great, with little if any issues when priming

I have an older version of the one you have, and it's been a champ. I've seen yours, and I don't know why it's so different. Sorry I'm no help here. Just a long-winded way of saying "tagged".
I have the RCBS, too. I like it a lot.

I have an old style Lee, a new style Lee and a RCBS model 90201 I like The RCBS the best. Lee's are less expensive and get the job done but you have to fiddle with them a lot to keep them working.

I have the RCBS 90200. Not universal, but since you are already using what I assume is a single stage RCBS press, you already have the shellholders you need. Works well and you can prime cases pretty fast all while watching TV.

i've owned the Lee and liked it a lot better than my RCBS you complain about. RCBS is a pain if a primer gets stuck or sideways or whatever. Takes some work to get it operational again. The Lee would always let me just push down and remove the case/primer that was causing the issue. RCBS is a pain to change caliber, unscrew, remove rod, replace shell holder etc. Not a big deal, but more difficult than I remember the Lee being.

Yeah, I'm thinking that may be the way I go next...

I have both the Lee tools (round & square trays), RCBS and the 21st Century tools.
The 21st Century is my go-to, it uses the Lee round trays and has an adjustable depth stop, very well made. Downside is that it does cost quite a bit more than the others, but worth it to me.
It looks like there is a newer version where depth is now click adjustable.

I used to prime on my 550. Never developed a feel when primer pockets would be too loose. Then went to the RCBS hand primer. After 200 plus rounds my hand would be tired and I would get inconsistent seating depth. Went to the Forster bench mounted priming tool. Pain in the ass to load primers, but consistent seating depth and just as fast. Now I use the RCBS bench mounted priming tool mounted next to a Giraud trimmer. Prime and trim................boom done.

I use the rcbs bench mounted priming tool too and am very happy with it.
