GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — A Mesa County sheriff’s deputy was critically wounded after confronting an armed 17-year-old walking on the road, Grand Junction Sentinel (http://www.gjsentinel.com/news/articles/veteran-deputy-shot-badly-hurt/) reported.
Deputy Derek Geer was in his “final hours of his life” Tuesday while final arrangements were being made for him, Sheriff Matt Lewis said to the publication.

“We will not wait to begin to honor Deputy Geer and his sacrifice,” Lewis said. “Effective immediately and until further notice please shroud your badge in honor of Deputy Geer.”
Geer responded to a report of a person walking around with a gun on Monday. Deputies encountered the 17-year-old suspect on the side of a four-lane highway and began talking with him.
When deputies confirmed to the teen he was going to be detained, a struggle ensued. Geer deployed a TASER on the suspect who pulled out his firearm and shot the officer several times.
Police radioed dispatch to report Geer was wounded and “bleeding heavily” from his face, Lewis said. Another deputy responded and found Geer has sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was not responsive.
The suspect was found in the backyard of a nearby residence.
Lewis praised Geer at a press conference for his dedication to the force during his 15-year career.
“This is a person who has dedicated his adult life to this organization, to protecting this community and today, quite possibly, made the ultimate sacrifice,” Lewis said. “This person was a member of this community. He was a father. He was a husband.”
The incident is under investigation.

A terrible thing. Everyone in the county offices was listening to the SO transmissions yesterday as they were hunting for the perpetrator. The officer, married with two children, is not expected to survive. I think it's been a long time since we've had an officer shot in the Grand Junction area.

In the old days, when there weren't so damn many lawyers, this guy would have had some really swift justice - at the end of a rope.

Also, this is why cops are so aggressive sometimes when responding to someone open carrying a rifle on the street. They have to think worst case scenario every time and not "Oh, its just some political stunt".

RIP. Sounds like a good officer.

Now the BS will start for the shooter: minor, confused, no one hugged him, rough childhood, psych history, and... Let him off because he is innocent. Miss the days of speedy trial and carrying out the sentence.

Nothing a refreshing of someones commissary privileges couldn't cure.

I think you're right. I think however, certain district courts and our news media have made police administrations heavy handed for any discipline in the ranks. Officers are becoming afraid to do their jobs, not because of what they encounter in front of them, but what the administrative review will do.

Prayers for all of us. It might not be long before there aren't any more Derek Greer's to watch over us. Even in death he's going to be serving his fellow man.

Deputy Geer is only the second Mesa County officer to be shot and killed in the line of duty. The last was in 1906, 110 years ago. Another sheriff's officer was shot and wounded in 1994.

You might find this article of interest: Fallen lawmen of Western Slope (http://www.gjsentinel.com/news/articles/fallen-lawmen-of-western-slope)

From the article:

The only other Mesa County deputy to die in the line of duty was jailer Edward Innes, the son of William Innes, the first elected Mesa County sheriff.
Edward Innes, 28, was struck from behind by an inmate, George McGarvey, on Sept. 26, 1906, in an escape attempt. Innes died the next day and McGarvey was captured by a De Beque rancher on Sept. 30.
McGarvey was tried on Oct. 3, found guilty on Oct. 4, and hanged on Oct. 5.
The Denver Post story about the execution was headlined “M’Garvey Jerked Into Eternity.”

Justice was swift back in the day.
