Pistol + carbine in the dark would be ideal. I don't know where, but if anyone is planning such a match, please sign me up!

Sounds like you just volunteered to be the Match Director and Co-ordinator...

That is actually how a lot of matches start.

Sounds like it would be a pain to collect brass.

True, but then I've never seen anybody try to collect brass at a night shoot. I did, however, make a trip out the next day and REALLY cleaned up!

Yep. Leads to "WTF did I get myself into". You also get to learn the nature of some people first hand.[beatdeadhorse]

Does anyone have access to an appropriate type of property within about an hour's drive of Denver?

We have been talking about doing a night shoot at CMSC(Ft, Carson gate 20 range), not necessarily a match though.

Almost all ranges have a use permit that prohibits night time shooting. Getting a waiver is a PITA. The few ranges that have night shooting waivers have them for shotgun.

But they are fun. I have shot 6 night 3Gun matches and will likely try to get another one in this year.

There's a day/night 3-gun match twice a year at the Pawnee Sportsmen's Center.

Hey Mark,
Can you tell us who currently offers this night shoot you're going to and can you tell us which ones you've shot at??
Thanks!!

I went to the 3 Crimson Trace Invitationals in Oregon, which is no more. That was one of the coolest matches I have ever shot. We got to use current issue NODs, select fire weapons, Thermal and IR optics on stage guns that I would likely not get to have shot otherwise. Starlight is supposed to be out here in the Southwest this fall. There are a few in Texas which I have attended as well. One a two night and one a one night. The only night shooting I have done in Colorado was on a LEA range.

I was lucky enough to be able to put one on for the 2014 Lake George 3-Gun closer. I added some special night rules and a whole bunch of safety measures and it was so much fun!

One of the obstacles (besides getting a place that will allow it) is finding a good time. It gets dark pretty late in the summer and the winters are unpredictable. We did that one in October before the time change and it worked out perfectly with shooting starting around 6:00. I think March is the only other somewhat predictable month around here that also gets people home at a reasonable hour.

I've mentioned this before, but got crickets in response. So, it does happen. It's fun. It's cheap (not counting ammo). It involves LOTS of ammo, and really lets you know what you need in gear.

What is the rationale for these use permits prohibiting night shooting? Safety? Noise? Something else?

I belong to a range that allows shooting 24/7.

I dont shoot at night that much, but it is an education.

Shooting skeet/trap at night under lights is a blast.

If that info is not classified kindly name names. Or, if it's top secret then we can talk in a sterile area at the next Pueblo RM match....

I'd guess the Hanover Range at the Frontier Sportsman's. I've been on that waiting list for 5 years

Likely irrational fear. In some cases, I can see noise and safety being an issue. There appear to be more shotgun ranges that allow it than not and there are of course ranges that don't even have use permits and no one bothers them. I was recently told a range allowed shooting at night and would be interested in holding a night match. When I looked at the use permit, night shooting of pistols and rifles was not allowed and no one at the range was even aware that they had a use permit.

Thanks Mark. I have approached my local range - the Boulder Rifle Club - about shooting suppressed .22LR only at night, on designated days, and having the shoots RO'd, and the proposal makes them nervous. My proposal addressed both noise and safety, so you may be correct in that the reaction is irrational.

What is the Pawnee "day/night" match? Is it really in the dark? Can you please post a match description?

It's a 3-gun that starts in the afternoon and continues into the night. They do at least one a year. Victory Defense puts it on, and the last one was October's 3-gun. The night part meanders along a creek bed on the prairie. Some close-in carbine/handgun, some shotgun and some long range carbine. Paper/steel/bleeding zombies. Something for everyone!

not to derail this thread, but any idea how that waiting list is moving?

You could call earl at Hickman Rifles and ask. He is a member here but not very active.
