Does any one happen to use a gps when they hunt I was taught land navigation with a gps and compas figured a gps unit will be easier to mark way points I picked up a garmin etrex 35t is the onxmaps worth the 100$

I think they are, especially when trying to identify private property. It also identifies land owners if you wanted to contact them for permission to hunt.

It was for hunting private land in Wyoming. I hunt wilderness in Colorado, so not so much use here.

I'm considering getting one since I got the etrex 35t in the bargain cave at cabelas for 150 because it was missing the 8gb micro sd card I thought it may be worth getting to have the additional maps

Depends on where you hunt but my buddies and I use the crap out of it. Up in national forest it isn't really necessary unless you are skirting private property a lot but on the plains it is extremely useful.

I think a gps unit with the chip has it's place, but is not a stand-alone system.

For marking waypoints, paths and such, they are great, nothing better IMO.

With regards to private boundaries, just be aware that there are some areas in certain counties here in Colorado that don't contain any landowner info. Also in some of the areas I hunt with mining claims, it's not so accurate. I suspect the info is only as accurate as the county they get the GIS info from and most have the statement that their data is not survey grade accurate.

If the boundaries are corners or 1/4 corners or divisions thereof, it's a great tool.

To me, the Onxmaps chip is totally worth it's cost. However, I don't solely rely on just a GPS with a chip, I also carry a good map and coordinate scale/protractor.
