View Full Version : I don't get it
Okay, so I'm not terribly experienced with computers and the internet. Only been using it for about a year, and that only so often. I catch on quick to most things, but.....
But everywhere I go everybody uses nicknames 'cept me. So, I feel oddball out, of course. But I don't know why people use nicknames. And I see a lot of interesting ones and it makes me curious as to where folks come up with some of the stuff. Some of them I understand-has to do with where they live, what they like to do, etc., but I don't know why'd you use one in the first place.
And, of course, the annoying one where people always act sssoooo tough and try to intimidate others. Simply childish and uncalled for. Ha! That coming from me, lol.
Not as annoying as some gun sites that always talk about "pie" or "cake" (the eating thereof). I really don't get that one.

Can I have ur social , bank account , address , annual income and real mothers maiden name?
People do to stay anonymous in most cases.
For me it is my ship I served on and my final rank.
As for the tough guy thing, Id say that most people have seldom been in real fights or even had their ass kicked. Also most people people view the anomnity as an opportunity to act in a way they normally can not in real life.

well... I don't figure on using my real name as a screen name/id/profile unless really warranted. Lots of information can be gathered from the internet, thus using different names and ID's helps keep things a little more descrete (sp).
my id here is gnihcraes (searching backwards) I used this ID once years ago for a specific information gathering ID and it's no longer necessary for that purpose, so I use it for most of my internet "stuff".
as for "pie" or "cake" well.. not really sure... I have a friend that wants to go get "pie" now and then... meaning he has had a bad day at work/home or otherwise just wants to get out with the guys and eat a piece of junk type food "pie" at a place like perkins or something... like going out and getting a cup of coffee with a friend... but there are probably other meanings and reasons for it... hopefully someone will fill us in.
hope this helps with some of your questions...
Kc (my real initials...) ...:)
ahhhhhh....anonymity....that makes sense, kind of. I really don't care who knows who I am. But you are funny about the SS# and stuff. I got a kick out of that.
I'm sorry your name sucks, Marlin.
"searching" is pretty cool.
Ya, I was thinking it might have something to do with pretending to be somebody or something you're not for a few people. I saw once where one of these phone sex girls was actually a guy and he got killed after the two met on Sally or something like that. Strange.....
But it is real interesting to know what the nick names mean. I also think it's cool about you ship and rank. That says a lot more about you than "Joe" or "Steve"!!!
I haven't had my ass kicked too many times, but boy, when I did it was pretty bad. I lost my last seven fights in the ring-that's why I quit. And boy, I still hurt from one of them. Seriously. Broke my jaw and the docs set it wrong or something. So I can't chew gum, ha-ha.
Maybe I should get a nick name. I feel left out, kind of. My wife has nick names for me (both good and bad....). I'm not really very interesting, so I don't know what it would be.
The "pie" thing-sometimes they just post replies and say "I like pie". Makes no sense to me.

I'm an honest joe, try not to pretend anything that I'm not, seems to work out best that way... pretty much what I think is what I say, which causes trouble sometimes... ha.
always afraid of an axx kicking, and it happens on occasion... so what were you doing in those last seven fights? Martial arts or boxing ?? You've got me curious now...
kc.
Vale Tudo. They call it "MMA" now a days, but it's totally different. Vale Tudo is Portuguese for "anything goes". Head butts, groin shots, fish hooking, small joint manipulastion, elbow spikes, etc. is all legal. Or was.
pickenup
08-26-2009, 21:20
My "nickname" came about YEARS ago. It was my CB handle. I was always on the go, auctions (of all kinds) flea markets, yard sales, going out of business sales, etc. First "real" job I ever had, was working at an auction house.
I would be headed out somewhere, and people would say.... What are you "pickenup" this time? Turned into my CB handle, then kind of naturally followed me online.
Wouldn't surprise me, if the wife is going to put.....
"AKA pickenup" in my obituary.

tackspitter
08-26-2009, 21:30
Tackspitter refers to what I do for a living. I do use my real name on my Crackbook page and group. I also use it when I email or comment to Politicians , newspapers , blogs etc. If Im too afraid of what Im saying to them to be anonymous then I probably shouldnt say it. But on certain forums like this even if I used my name Mike which is pretty generic no one here probably knows me anyway so my Tackspitter moniker gives me some uniqueness .
Didn't say My name sucked.. Just said "Marlin" was cooler...
My name means Black or Dark water in Scottish... Which is pretty cool in it's own right...

Mine is the style and model of my mountain bike. I was on mountain bike forums before I found this site so I stay with the same nickname so I don't have to remember more than one.
Sorry.
Black or Dark water sounds really cool. I don't think my name means anything. Marlin is cool in it's own right-that was the first gun I ever had, oh, about 35 years ago.....a Marlin Golden 39A. Man, I loved that gun. Accurate as hell. Had it up to 12 years ago when someone broke in and stole it. Man, was I upset!
Ya, Mike is generic. But safe!
Sorry to sound stupid, but I don't know what a "Tackspitter" is. Like horse tack? or the nails?
Pickenup is cool. That makes sense. It's always interesting to me to learn this stuff. Gives me a couple ideas for a nick name for me. I cooked for a lot of years when I was young(er). Maybe cookie? like on Beetle Bailey. Naw, sounds too feminine.
tackspitter
08-26-2009, 21:58
It refers to a furniture reupholsterer. We put tacks in our mouths to hold them and take them out with the end of a magnetic hammer to apply them . Hence the term Tackspitter. Not very glamorous I know. As for being safe if your referring to my Quote at the bottom. I heard that one day when some one was debating gun control with someone who said they would feel safer if we banned guns and the other guy said Ill keep my gun thank you because feeling safe is like being safe only different. He may have gotten it somewhere but I always thought it was cool.

While I'm more open here on this forum that most other online activities Im involved with, even the most seemingly unimportant information can be the final piece of the puzzle an identity thief or online predator needs to make you a victim. Using a nickname adds another level of security.
My handle is a nickname I got while working for U.S. Space Command while I was Active Duty. As an IT guy I always carried a leatherman tool on one hip and a Gerber Gator on the other. Apparently that, coupled with my real name, led a co-worker to call me Ginsu (yeah, like the knive people; shirtly thereafter adapted to Ginsue). The name stuck - especially with another co-worker who is a hunting partner and my best friend. Now, that's all he and his family and all of my other hunting partners call me. In fact, anyone who knows me through this guy only knows me as "Ginsue", or "The Ginsue". I was told (by this guy) that it's actually more of a title, "like 'The President' ".
Now you know the rest of the story.
No problem... Think I was 8 or 9,, found one of those baby names books, and looked it up.. Found out it was derived from McDougal,, wanted to change it to that, 'Cause THAT was cool... My Mother wouldn't let me though...[Bang] German/English mix with a Scottish name,, No wonder I'm confused most of the time..

Now you know the rest of the story.
Nice allusion to Paul Harvey. What a genuinely great radio personality!
Michigan Militia... Well, I came up with this nickname about 8 or 10 years ago when I played Medal of Honor and Call of Duty 2 online and I needed a good nickname then. I'm from Michigan and I wanted to let people associate with that, but I wanted it to have a connection to war or fighting or something and Militia sounded good so I put the two together. I am in no way associated with the ACTUAL Michigan Militia, nor do I ever plan to be. It's just a good-sounding online gaming name that has followed me to several online forums.
I know this is the COLORADO AR-15 club forums, but I grew up in Michigan and I've met some great people just by virtue of having Michigan in my name. So that's my story and I'm stickin' to it. [Beer]

I'm from Scottish decent and my last name means "bald hill" I guess I know what to look towards when I get older. [ROFL1]
On the subject of nicknames, I think most people... more so if you were in the Military are given nicknames. The nickname that was given to me when I was in the Corps was "Wicked". I'm kinda proud of that nickname seeing how a lot of people ended up with nicknames that are not that great.. like gumass, Uno (guy had one testicle) fish, ropeburn, or beans. I learned to appreciate mine really quick :D
I don't really use that nickname anywhere but around those who know the meaning and why it was given. I use RRD3 because those are my initials, Wicked is too common of a "online" nickname. Like MichiganMilitia I have played all the online games like MOHA, COD and so forth with a bunch of former Military guys and this is the only time use the nickname Wicked outside of my Corps family.
But everywhere I go everybody uses nicknames 'cept me.
I'm kind of the same way, and made that mistake when joining this board. I've written the webmaster to change my name to something else but...... (hey webmaster: BUT..........).
I actually almost never use my real name but rather an acronym that I've used for years - except in places where there might be a tight LOCAL community where you might actually meet some of these people. The problem for me is not so much worry about identity theft or anything, it's that I am a conservative in a VERY particular liberal industry and would hate for my commie would-be clients to Google me and say "ahhhh, this guy is a whacko right wing gun owner". I'm not very creative and picking a nickname was hard for me. I have several different ones but the most common one is opie011 and I chose that one because someone told me I looked like opie and then I just added 011 to the mix for no reason. So my nickname really has no meaning but I have one[Beer]

screen name Jim fairly self explainatory. easy to remember. @ work everything has a password and sign in name. thats 6 additional logins i have to remember so on gun boards i keep it simple
I always try to use my real name, and only don't when it has already been taken. I started internet life on an import car board where everyone is always CivicSi01 and RedITR and crap like that. Then 3 years later, they're 4-5 cars removed from what they used to have when they made their name. I always thought that was dumb, so I've always just used my name.

I've had this screen name ever since I first got on the internets. I dont even remember where it came from. This was back when I was using ICQ on a windows 95 platform. I think the processor on that puppy was a whopping 133mhz. I was barely starting highschool at that time.

My name doesn't mean I'm a Doctor but I do play one in bed when getting "some strange trim"(or they can be used individually too). But its short for David of Colorado a name I use on a sport bike forum. I wanted to say where I was and what to call me. I like being helpful!

Tristan, that DL shot makes you look like Kiefer Sutherland, or Jack Bauer if that's more palatable. ;)
My SN is from a book series by the late Robert Jordan, the Wheel of Time. It's been my screenname since early high school (I'm 24 now) and it's the same all over the internet.

You know that Brandon Sanderson is currently writing the last installation of that series? Just FYI. If you haven't read any of Sanderson's stuff, I highly recommend it. Start with Elantris, then read the Mistborn series.

Your photo would make people think weird thoughts! Like.....is he Asian, mongol,Russian, man that guys f#cked up looking! And your name wouldn't help either. I remember when I first spoke to you. I was a bit apprehensive but you turned out top notch in my book![Beer]
And I think my name describes me to a tee! Got a problem with that?!
Short story on it......I was a student at Colorado School of Trades for gunsmithing and I was real new. Maybe a week into it when a more "senior" guy kind of through around his seniority and bumped me off of a machine I was wanting to use. I got pissy and the first thing that came out of my mouth was " you fat ass guntroll looking bastard......!" I through the name around a bit when referring to guys that probably touch their guns more than women and have probably never felt the warmth of a women. I then met and befriended a guy that I considered a "GunTroll" and he turned out OK. He's on here from time to time. I let him in on my first impression of him and he said " you say it like its a bad thing being a GunTroll" which ended up being my signature as well on here and a few other sites. Since then I feel the name could be viewed both ways. Bad or good. I use it because I have heard "Troll" being used on the net to describe forum people. "Gun" self explanatory. I am a GunTroll!
The end.
