Im looking at a place in Baca county. I want to hear from residents with information on the area. How are the people? How is the town? Any problems I should know about? Dispensaries? Shooting Ranges? This isnt a major thing, since our place would be plenty big enough for the longest, long range shooting.

Thanks.

Is there a safe clean motel to sleep the night over?

Starlight Motel isn't bad, but a bit dated. J's is okay as well.

Area is very economically depressed. If I remember correctly, it seems that somewhere in the neighborhood of 80% of area residents get some form of govt assistance. Is or was a bit of a meth problem in the area.
Tyically very dry and windy.
Talk to Herb Brown, at the Springfield Gun Shop, about the range.
People are friendly, but can be a bit standoff-ish with non-locals on occasion.

Which direction, and how far from town is the place you are looking at?

Hurley is from the La Junta area, iirc.

Both of my parents grew up there, but I haven't been down in maybe two years.

All fairly spot on, although I haven't spent a ton of time in Springfield (spent more time in Kim with the occasional trip to Springfield). I'm not sure about the meth issue as I haven't been around the area in over 10 years, but small towns down in the area are fairly well known for drug problems. The Starlight is old but I've stayed there and it was fine in my opinion. Outside of a friend that owns a tire/service shop in Kim, my contacts out that way are slim these days. Sorry I couldn't provide any more info, hopefully there are other members more in the know.

Didn't think of the whole "rolling up the sidewalks" thing, but that's kind of a rural given.
Every motel in town is right on Main St, which also happens to be the highway through town. Sorry. Another oversight. Didn't realise you were heading down so soon.

Also, don't know where you lived before your current place, but SE corner of CO is a lot more rural and removed from "civilization" than most anything in Northern Colorado.

Not defending, just apologizing for missing some of the things you pointed out in my description.

Is there a cowboy shoot near by?

The action was probably on the south end of town at the VFW post. (only kind of kidding, probably 2 or 3 older gents in there nursing drinks and telling lies)

Used to be a great little town, but time and progress have not been kind. You should have tried to stay at the Starlight several years ago, when they were having the drought in Texas. Between hay from up north heading south and oil pipe heading north from Texas, it was non-stop.

I had a chance to buy a home in town with signicant family history (both sides) a couple years back for less than $15k.

Wanted to use it for getaways, coyotes, pdogs, etc., but local economy, drought and drive time from here put me off of it.

Really a shame how it has deteriorated.
