Thinking about a Rem 700

So I've pretty much set my sights on getting a Remington 700 in .308 for some hunting and paper shooting. Though I am not sure which version to get. The SPS Varmint with a 26" heavy barrel profile seems to be the cheapest, and I'm thinking I'd probably swap the stock out anyway. I'm still unclear what, if any, benefits the 5R and VTR offer over the other versions. I had thought about getting the 700P to build from, but it seems they are out everywhere, and the Varmint has the same barrel profile and twist rate. Anyone have experience in the differences?

This is a great turn key operation. Only thing it needs is the bbl threaded for a suppressor. ;)

I have given a lot of thought to that rifle in the TP, it seems like a good package deal, especially since I don't yet own a .308. My only thought was, if there is much difference in accuracy and ballistics at say 200-300 or even a little more yards from a 20" vs a 26" barrel if they are both in a heavy profile.

Shorter for your needs is better then trying to swing another 6" around in the woods. The difference is part bbl, the other ammo used. I know i can do 5-600 with the 20". Another forum member shooting a 16" AR with 75gr loads does 600. So ammo plays a major part in the equation.

Ammo is a large part of the solution. If the gun is setup solid first, then loads developed for it, you should have no problem hitting 600 consistently. I shoot my 20" rem700 out way past that with the only accuracy issue is my wind calls so it's not the barrel length. If I did have a longer barrel then my MV could be developed faster to help in drop and reduce the deflection, just a small amount, from wind.

BTW: Dave if you're free today we can go shoot my 20" Rem out to 700+ to see that it's not a problem.

Thanks for the offer, but I had already left to spend the day with friends. Though we did spend a couple of hours shooting pistols, where I learned that I'm still not a Glock fan, the grip doesn't feel right to me.

The main reason I had been looking at the longer barrel is my inexperience in long distance shots. I figured it would help compensate for user error, plus I don't yet have a reloading setup to fine tune loads. So it's factory match loads, at least for a while.

Long distance isn't an issue. If you're off during the week lmk. We can hit pawnee shooting sports for some steel out to 1K. Buy a few boxes of ammo and give it a try.

I work M-F. It's great most of the time. My boss usually wants a week or so notice for a day off, but I'd hate to schedule a day off and have it turn out to be 8" of snow here and 13" up there. If I give him a date range he'd probably be ok.

The extra 6" won't make that big of a difference in what the rifle is capable of.

So I ended up grabbing the 26" varmint since it was on sale for $510 a few weeks ago at grab a gun and I had a $100 gift card plus a free shipping coupon. So for $410 out of pocket it was my best option.

Next question will be for rings. I already have a night force steel 20 moa base and a weaver grand slam scope in 3-12 x 50mm with a 30mm tube. What height rings will I need? I've seen some say that the extra high is used for 50mm scopes, but some say the high can work. I'm looking at the vortex optics precision rings and both are in stock on amazon, I just want to make sure I'm getting the right height.

I've had great luck with 30mm aluminum TPS TSR low rings on all my non-magnum rifles. With EGW picatinny rails and the low rings I have been able to clear 50mm objectives with no problems at all. I would definitely think the high and extra high rings would make it difficult to get a solid check weld (without the addition of a large comb riser).

Check out warne tactical rings I've been happy with mine I used the extra high rings I put a vortex 6-18x44

Go with the lowest rings you can. My guess would be medium. I ran a 56mm on mediums on a heavy barrel R700 for a bit.
