View Full Version : Ok, someone help me out here, fitting a 1911 barrel
So I picked up a KKM threaded barrel to run my can with. Started out just fitting the hood, took about a 1/16 to get it squared away. Throw a round in it to check how it fit and the trouble starts. the chamber is about a 1/4 of an inch to short! The case literally stick out of the back, the slide doesn't go into battery, and there is no way I took that much off to fit just the hood. So what do I do from here, anyone have any idea on how I even got here? I'll get pics up a little later. Thanks in advance!
*And no, I screwed up from the start and didn't check the chamber then.*

You wouldn't have these sorts of problems with a Glock. [Neene1]

I was thinking the same thing, it had to have started out as a short chamber. Unless it was mislabeled and it was a .45 GAP, but I don't know the specs.

No, you just get "Glock'd" brass from the unsupported chamber[handbags]
Most 1911 barrels are short chambered. Get everything fitted then chamber it last.

The hood may need to be radiused on the sides. Then Chamber reamer, as needed. Mine was like that before rounding the sides of hood. Then chamber reamed.
Thanks Hoser and Kazoo, that's actually great news. Means my barrels not shot, just more fitting than I was planning on!

All of my fitted 1911 barrels have come short chambered.
It's really the best way to get a barrel properly fitted to a slide. You get the barrel/slide interface set, and then ream the chamber to keep the chamber tight.
End result: Excellent barrel fit, and Excellent accuracy.
Appreciate everyones feedback and advice, I'm just glad to now I didm't muck up this barrel. Thanks!
