View Full Version : Anyone been up to Deadwood, SD?
Wifey and I are going to drive up to Deadwood for a long weekend in May. Any must do or must see? We are planning a day trip to Mt. Rushmore.
I went up for the old West gun show. It was awesome stayed at a small hotel. The mini Sturgis was in town so lots going on. We rented 4 wheelers and went up some trails.

Definitely don't miss the Crazy Horse monument. A drive through Custer National park is cool too.
if you have enough time, I highly suggest Devils Tower Wyoming and the Black hills. Devils tower is something to see in a lifetime for sure!
For a longer stay, the wild mustang preserve a little south is worth a visit too if you're into horses.

Make the drive up Spearfish canyon, really all the drives are nice. One of my favorite places.

if you like caves, there's a bigassed one in Wind Cave National Park. Not quite Carlsbad Caverns, but interesting nonetheless

Spent a summer in Spearfish a few years back. The Black Hills are very pretty. Keep in mind we'd have to dig a well to get to those elevations. Devil's Tower is really cool and I recommend a visit if you're in the area. I really liked Mt. Rushmore and thought the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs SD was neat too.

Lots to do up there! We go every year and always find new stuff, the train from hill city to keystone is cool, cosmos, rushmore, custer park etc. we did the crazy horse thing and its cool to do once but once was enough. We stayed at the flinstones camp ground in custer one year and went to the museum and old court house and that was cool. Rapid city has lots of stuff to see and do as well.
I was there years ago.. Deadwood itself is the BlackHawk/Central City of SD so don't expect much.. The Blackhills and Badlands offer plenty to see though.

That's a death nail. I live next to them and avoid like the plague. Kinda wanting to explore the Blackhills though.
Needles highway drive is really pretty!
If I remember correct the Medicine Wheel is also in that part of the world.

That place is fun....might go there next weekend when I'm in Rapid for my grandmother's 90th!
I've done everything that's been suggested and you can't go wrong with what you choose. If you get extra time, travel east to Wall and do some shopping at Wall Drug.

The graveyard overlooking deadwood is worth a stroll through. Lots of history there.

If you like a beer and a cigar drop into Deadwood Tobacco Co. She keeps a fine humidor and has entertainment at night at least on the weekends.

I'll just go ahead and second everything that's already been said. Spearfish Canyon and Sturgis Canyon are pretty drives. The Homestake Mine in Lead is a big ass hole in the ground that is worth seeing. Devil's Tower in Hulett, WY is a nice stop as well. Be sure to grab a beer at Crow Peak Brewing in Spearfish.
I lived in the Black Hills for 10 years so I'm pretty biased about it.
WOW, I had no idea there was so much up there. Lots like this might turn into a week long trip.
Thanks!

Great area especially on a motorcycle, been there for the rally last couple of years but I am going in June to be there without all of the traffic. All of the suggestions here are great, we had dinner in Deadwood at an Italian restaurant that overlooked main street that was a former bordello, a very memorable evening.
