Greetings all,

For those of you that are computer literate, is there a way I can figure the distance, in yards, between two residential addresses? I'm appealing my property tax rate and this would be useful info if there's a way of doing it. I suppose I could drive to each, make note of GPS coordinates, etc. but figured the braintrust here might have an easier way of doing this.

thanks/

Download Google earth, it has a ruler function.

Google earth.

there used to be a disclaimer though that their data was reliable with a 30 meter variance. I am not sure if it is still true.

Edit: They use SRTM grid data. Depending of where you are the grid will be 30x30 m accuracy, up to 90x90 in some area. Basically: you can get a ballpark figure, but not an accurate measurement.

-ballpark, for my purposes, is more than adequate.

You can figure distance for drop, but you'll still have to determine windage on your own....[ROFL1]

Many running trackers will let you draw your own maps and measure in kilometers, with smallest increment being .10 km, or 10 meters.

Another option is to look at an aerial of your property, go measure something visable (driveway, gutter, street width, etc), then print your photo, measure the known distance with a ruler, do the math to figure out how many feet per centimeter, then measure the distance you want to know on your print out.

Range finder. Or Tax assessor roles.

It's for taxes, not a term paper.

If you need more precision you can always download USGS Quads for free here (http://store.usgs.gov/b2c_usgs/usgs/maplocator/(ctype=areaDetails&xcm=r3standardpitrex_prd&carea=%24ROOT&layout=6_1_61_48&uiarea=2)/.do).

If you need them plotted out, we do that where I work (http://www.macvanmaps.com/) and they're $9 for regular paper $15 for waterproof.

It'll show driving distance and straight-line distance...
