Orientation of Crush Washer?

In the past I've used only flash suppressors that did not require a crush washer. This time I went on the cheap and bought an A2 birdcage with crush washer for prone shooting with a precision rifle (for no downward blast in dirt/sand).
Which direction do I put the crush washer on? Does it matter?

Small end towards the barrel. But it really doesn't matter. Will work either way.

So, you are saying that it should be concave toward the muzzle, and not convex ?
