View Full Version : My Rant about Crumudgeons
This happened on March 10th of this year.
As I'm walking in the elevator at the Denver courthouse to get LEGALLY married to my beautiful wife of 5 years, a crumudgeon walks onto the elavator as the doors are closing with the small wedding party headed for the 3rd floor. As the door closed this schmuck looks me up and down and says " Back in my day they didn't hand out awards like that to PRIVATES! Your lucky YOU weren't in 'Nam, they were actually shooting at us back then."
Keep in mind I was wearing my Uncle Sams Mis-Guided Childrens Issued Dress Blues with Salty Lance Corporal Chevrons. I haven't owned a suit since childhood and dont plan on owning one ever.
Ok back on track.
I told him I was sorry I hadn't been born 50 years before I was. And that HE was lucky he hadn't been born 50 years later, otherwise he would have been in Afghanistan with me, (assuming he was a Vietnam volunteer). To which he replied "Afghanistan was nowhere near as bad as Vietnam, YOU were lucky! I told him to "have an outstanding day...Fucking Asshole."
And that was how I walked off the elevator and into the courtroom to meet the Judge for my Wedding.
If the elevator ride had been longer I think I might have been summoned back to the same court house for an altogether different event.

I hate guys like that. I had a similar run in with some old dumb ass, but it wasn't combat related so it's not a cool story.

Yeah? You and that son of a bitch were both lucky you weren't in my backyard during the summer months while I barbecued and drank beer. I stubbed a toe and burned myself on the grill twice. During the winter months, I got cold and wet while snowshoeing at least three separate occasions. Granted, I wasn't anywhere within 5000 miles of anyone non-domestic that wanted to kill me. But it was still hard...
Some people are just angry. Nothing will ever compare or equal their life experience because they are always the victim.
From the looks of your pictures, it was water off a ducks back. Just the way such drivel should be treated.

I'm just glad he didn't try that crap with any of my units surviving amputees. It would have been glorious to see the CCTV feed of him getting his arse handed to him with a prosthetic!

Curmudgeon? No that guy was just an asshole ... gives us honorable curmudgeons a bad name.
I stewed over it AFTER the ceremony. I try my best not to let folks get to me, something the Marine Corps had a large part in helping me with. It's kind of funny looking back at it in hindsight. I just can't imagine trying to talk shit to someone on their way in to get married. Guy probably has some great "War stories" down at the V.A. parking lot.
Wierd thing was he was well dressed, didn't smell, clean cut, and seemed normal until he opened his mouth.

Congrats to you and your family.!!!! Blow off the old windbag. Lately I have noticed that old people seem to be more cranky and expect more people to attend to their grumpiness.
2 weeks ago I was exiting the gas station door and an old fart was leaving his car at the gas pumps heading toward the doors. As I passed him (about 20 feet from the doors) he said "hummph, you don't hold the door open for people". It was so far away from the doors I replied " And I'm not going to wipe your ass in the bathroom either. Your so far away from the door and I have better things to do than be the doorman at a gas station." .

Congratulations! :) I'll say it, because there is no way you can hear this enough: your wife is absolutely lovely, and your kids are precious!
I've often found that when people hit a certain age, they justify their bad behavior by convincing themselves that they "earned it." The guy couldn't even get your rank right. Someone probably pissed in his Wheaties that morning, and he felt justified in trying to "demand" respect. Of all the days, and of all the elevators, he had to pick yours! So now you've got a story to tell at barbecues, right before you roll your eyes, shake your head and take a drink of beer before flipping the burgers.
Court House weddings are the BEST. The spouse and I got hitched at one, and the judge was wearing the loudest plaid pants and blazer I've ever seen- did I mention they were two different types of plaid?

Congrats on getting married. Guys like this are the reason I can't be at American Legion or VFW posts for very long. Every generation thinks the next one's service members/vets had so much easier than they did, and no one but them had it rough. Granted, those of us that were in Iraq or Afghanistan had more technology to aid us, more sophisticated weapons and probably better living arrangements than past generations. None of it makes it any easier on a person when lead starts coming at you and you start seeing your brothers fall.

Since he looked at your chevron and thought private, I'm guessing he was Army. He probably did his tour and got out as soon as he hit stateside. He was probably having a bad day of his own and took it out on you. That can happen at any age but tends to happen more and more as you get older.
I'd say forget about it; he was being a dick (which may or may not be a permanent condition for him) but you have a beautiful family and formal paperwork filed with the state now. Just remember him and try not to BE him in 40 years ...
He was really jealous,,he only wore toilet lids.,,not GOOD double Experts congrats.
Both on returning AND an AWESOME family.

Old timer shook his fist towards my wife and mimed for her to "get off the F'n phone" as he was walking out of Costco in front of her last week. (She was in her car stopped at the crosswalk for him). She rolled down the window and told the old bastard that she loved him. She got an "uh...wut?" back. Priceless.

I learned very quickly in the military that the first person you meet after you complete any school, training or deployment is the person who says "Oh, you just got back from [jump school/ranger school/Afghanistan/Iraq] huh? Yeah, I hear it's a lot easier over there than it was in my time.
It's just silly d!ck measuring and one-upmanship. :rolleyes:

I kinda like the term Curmudgeon and I like to think of myself in that group but after reading many definitions due to your post... In none of them did it mention Asshole or being a Dick! I am sure either of those describes that guy a bit better!

We (Service members) all served at the time it was needed. We did what we were told and that helped the USA how it was supposed to. Some in the air, some under water, some dodging bullets and some doing paper work or feeding others, etc. Thank you for your service regardless. That is more than 99% of the rest of those we did it for. It is stupid to try to compare, or degrade each other when we are already part of a better 1% than those other 1%'ers.
And congrats on the Wedding, may it be long and un-eventful. Live the dream and pity those that have lost it.
