Don't forget!
My hunting partner called me and I didn't know it was so close. I thought it opened in April. I figured there wasn't a thread on here so I still had time.

[emoji1303][emoji1303] thanks.
Almost did.
Thanks for the reminder, I'll be doing my applications online today. I hope to get licenses for elk, deer, pronghorn, bear and moose. I'm able to get 2 elk tags while saving preference points, but will use my 2 points for a buck pronghorn tag this year. Will take a different strategy on deer, trying for a later season in a trophy unit near the UT border. Also, this will be my 16th consecutive year applying for a Bullwinkle license. Maybe I'll get lucky and draw the Brainard Lake unit this year? HA! [fudd]

I'd appreciate a link. Still trying to learn this stuff.
Does anyone know if there is an animal harvest report available from last year in a form OTHER than the pdf provided on colorado parks and wildlife website? I have that one, but its just a large image and you cant search it or export to excel to manipulate it.
thanks!

Not harvest report, but here's a link to interactive maps where you can see migration and concentration of different species:
First pick a GMU, but once the map opens, you can move around the whole state - kinda like Google Earth/Maps
You have to click around on the "Map Layers and Legend" to show "Game Species" and then choose what you want to highlight.

I have seen them at DPW offices, but they are in a booklet form and normally only report the percent of the tags that were successful. I forgot what the book is called...it had a lot of other useful information in it as well.

Not sure what you mean by "it's just a large image and you can't search it". They have the different regions broke down in units with season, sex, total harvest, total hunters and success rate for last year, 3 year and 5 year. If this is not what you were referring to maybe you'll find it a little helpful

Thanks- this is the one I was referring to- it is searchable, you're correct. I was looking for one I could export or copy into excel to sort and compare the units easily. This one just copies into one huge cell, not very useful for data mining. I could go through line by line and enter it, but dont have the time (or patience) right now. thanks for the replies!
I went through the book tonight and outlined the hunt codes I plan to submit! I wish everyone good luck that they get what they want!

I've tried several times to apply online today and keep getting some sort of "you are not on file" error. Anyone else getting this? I've had a license for more than 20 years.....fxckin government. Effecient as ever.
I was going to apply tomorrow online. Hope they clear it up!

I was able to apply Sunday around 7PM with no issues.
I'd appreciate a link. Still trying to learn this stuff.
They don't make it easy. I put in for a mule deer tag in 105, at least that was my intention.

Cool thanks. Points for me. Money for Kansas, turkey and deer.

For me it was my suffix. I needed to put an I after my last name to get it to recognize.

Apps went in fine this morning. Woohoo!
My dad had that issue on his iPad. Did it on his laptop and worked fine. I got mine in a couple days ago on my iPad no problems
Just put in. Thanks again for the heads up. Probably taking a point for deer this year and we'll see what happens with elk.

Thanks for the reminder. I always seem to forget every year until I see a thread reminding me.

$720 ? Sounds like you forgot to put in for something. That or you've been lucky enough to draw one of the big three.

I was contemplating starting to put in for points for moose every year in case I ever want to hunt one. I've been doing that with bear and antelope the last two years.

You gotta start sometime. I'm currently at 10 points for moose, sheep, and goat. I have 7 for elk, 9 for bear, and 11 for deer. I used my antelope point last year. Remember that you have to have 3 points for moose before your even in the draw, so better start putting in.

Yeah sheep wasn't working for some reason and wouldn't validate. Kept trying and it finally went through eventually.
My daughter's 12 but hasn't taken hunters safety yet. Can I start collecting points for her now, or do we have to have the class done first?

She has to have her class done first. You have to have a valid hunter safety number to apply. Kids used to be able to apply for points before they turned 12 as long as they had completed hunter safety, but now they have to be 12 even to acquire points.
They have to be 12 before the start of the season that they are applying for.
Are you collecting points, and hunting every year?
To answer simply, Yes I'm collecting points and hunting every year. Obviously not for moose, sheep, or goat, but I hunt elk every year and deer every other year or two years. I use my antelope point every other year to go with a buddy down south. I apply for tags that are hard to draw with my first choice and then use my second choice to draw tags that I can draw with zero points. your second, third, and fourth choice don't use or accumulate any preference points.
I'm totally clueless about this whole "points" thing. Almost like they don't want anybody to hunt here, it sure ain't easy.

Everyone wants to hunt here and that's why they have the point system. if you truly want to get a better understanding of the points system feel free to pm me your contact info, and I would be more than happy to help you learn and understand the whole preference point system. But in a nut shell in a given unit the tags are given to the person or persons with the most points. Every year that you are unsuccessful you are awarded another point and in turn moving you closer to the top of the list. The system is a little different for sheep, moose, and goat. Here is a link that will better explain the system http://huntplannerapp.com/blog/colorado-preference-points-demystified

Don't forget you will need your kids Social Security Number to apply. While at home not a big deal, if you are out and want to buy a small game or turkey license it can be a pain. When you apply online the system will generate a CID number, keep it with you so you can buy a license. The division may not be able to help you locate it over the phone. F---- Federal Government!!
holy crap!! Thank goodness for this thread. I have been saying for days I can't forget and almost did.

Anyone here put in for the whitetail only deer tags? First time I did this year, used all my pref points last year, figured it was a good way to get a tag.

The hard part will be finding whitetails. I bought a leftover whitetail doe tag for GMU 104 last year, then found out there's NO public land in 104, and there's damn few whitetails in this state. If CPW had their way, there wouldn't be ANY. I was told they want to keep it mulies only here.

Yeah, I figure at least it lets me hunt. Mule deer are the bigger draw for out of staters.
I'll be grabbing an OTC cow elk tag. Not interested in mounting a rack, just looking for freezer filling. First time in 3 years for me for any big game hunting.

I'd definitely be interested in that myself. I want meat, not antlers, and a nice tender young cow is far more appealing than a tough old bull with an impressive rack. And I'm too cheap to pay for taxidermy either, not to mention having no place to hang a mounted head, or a wife that would even let it in the house!

I've always had the "fill the freezer" attitude with hunting. 2 years ago I got denied a tag so I got an OTC bull tag and bagged one - first bull too. I told my wife I wanted to mount it and she was like "WHAT???? INSIDE the house?" I convinced her and made a deal that this would be only one. It's a Euro mount, just the skull and antlers. She loves it now, but it will be the only one...maybe. [Coffee]
I never had any intention of mounting anything, until two seconds after I shot my first buck.
They get used to it after a while and eventually like stuff hanging up. I started with an elk rack, then there was 4 of them, now I have deer, antelope, turkey, ducks, pheasant in the house and a shoulder mount buffalo being worked on now.
I can only imagine taxidermy is expensive as hell, is it? Doesn't it take months of waiting too? For say, the typical head/neck/antlers mount.
My shoulder mount is going to be just over a year. I how they get the timing right so I can just bring the antlers down when I'm down there to hunt this year. Assuming we draw again.

To do a shoulder mount is pretty expensive, anywhere from$800 to $1500 for an elk. Of coarse the pose and quality and how well known your taxidermist is all adds into the equation. European mounts are always a classic touch and a lot cheaper, especially if you do it your self. I have a great recipe for boiling skulls then I add a wall plate and she's done. I have shoulder mounts on my wall as well bit these are a few of my favorites just because they are 100% diy start to finish, everything from the hunt to boiling and bleaching the skulls to the final Metal skull mounts.

Those are some really nice heads, Lars. Worthy of full mounts. I know, they're expensive. I've only had two full mounts done, and boiled the others in European mounts.
Now that Gilpin Guy saved us all from missing this year's hunt (he certainly saved me!), when is the date where we can log onto the state website and trick an early answer as to whether we drew tags or not?

I tried the trick yesterday and it wouldn't let me enter all the info, so it wouldn't allow a search. I figured it was a bit early. As soon as someone sees that it's working let us know. [Beer]
I just put in for points this year, so I'm waiting on my refund check!
