Opening Day Bow Season

Here it is opening day and I'm home sicker than a dog. I actually have my truck packed, telling myself yesterday that I'd feel better in the morning. I may get all medicated on nightquil tonight and go up really early tomorrow no matter what.

I've been hunting archery for over 20 years and never missed opening day yet until the last couple of years. But never fear we have plenty of time to get out there so I look at it like this. It's too hot right now anyways. If your lucky enough to get in to some Wapiti can you get it down before the meat goes bad? Sure it can be done but, I want to enjoy my hunting season and live to tell about it. I'am going to wait until it cools down a little bit before I go full bore. The last 10 days of the season for me seems to be the most productive and hopefully with the rut in full swing I'll wack something. Well I did make it up for what I'd consider a half day on Sunday. Seen five deer total. One being a large buck. Couldn't count points because the aspens were so thick. I do know he was very tall,wide, and in velvet.

Make a long story short. I stalked within 36 yards and still missed. I didn't account for the steep angle of the mountian and shot clean over the top of his back.

I had plans to shot a doe this year, but now I don't know.........by far this deer is bigger than anything I've ever shot. May have to hold out for him now.

Have access to 120 acres private property that boarders public land near Lake George. Hunt all along where this private/public boarder exist for several miles. All of this Hayman burn area is full of grass and small aspen now. Lots and lots of deer to go with all the food.

Can't wait for Friday.

so far elk hunting has been not so hot. the rut hasn't kicked in at both areas I have been too. some guys said steamboat they were going nuts, but not a peep where I was at.

Been hunting near St.Mary's Glacier for 3 weekends and haven't been able to close the deal with an Elk nor a Deer in fact the closest I've come to an Elk is the one I hit with my Dodge Ram this Sunday! No kidding its been tough so far but were moving into the Holy Cross Wilderness next week for a week straight, that should do the trick.

I am just curious because on my way to elk hunting at night I avoided a 6x6 that ran out in front of me! beautiful elk and if I had an old hunting rig it might be at the taxidermist as we speak, but my new truck told me to stop!

I was up @ Rocky Mtn Natl Park yesterday for the annual visit with my wife. We were very disappointed as there were a lot less elk out and about and little bugling. Only a very few of the aspens are just now starting to change color. It looks like the whole eco-system for elk is running a week to two weeks behind its normal schedule. I'm guessing it has everything to do with all of the rain and mild summer that we've had.

I'll be up with a friend this weekend near South Fork. Hell be bow hunting and I'll just be practicing with my bow in camp and doing a little ATV'ing. Since this is where I'll be rifle hunting in a month this will allow me to do a little scouting while I'm there.

about the same findings for us up around rifle. A friend did get his cow elk early in the first week, other than that its been quiet...

haven't heard on the Moose hunt yet, Dad and friends must still be seeking them out...

A friend sent me this moose pic taken by someone who attends church with her. The pic was taken this month on the West side of Cottonwood Pass.

While the moose is laying down so it's really hard to see it's size, check out it's paddles - they're fantastic. I guess it's time for me to start putting in for my moose points - perhaps I'll draw out before I'm too old to hunt!

Wow, nice picture! I was going to go up and assist with the moose hunt, but they haven't called to say if they are even able to locate one yet... usually it's not too hard, but weather must be playing a part again...

I was bow hunting deer outside of Lyons today and spotted a doe and a young buck. I had a clear shot at the doe but didn't account for the elevation and my arrow went between her legs. :( I was looking forward to some backstrap steaks.
