Hey Folks,

Excuse my ignorance on the topic but what makes an AR Pistol a Pistol and What makes an SBR an SBR?

Are the legal to own and are there extra steps needed in order to own one?

Thanks!

Completely arbitrary laws. [Beer]

A google search of "AR-15 pistol vs SBR" will give tons of results, but here is the skinny:

A SBR is a shoulder fired, rifled firearm with a barrel less than 16 inches in length or with an overall length less than 26 inches. SBRs are regulated by the ATF and require a $200 tax stamp.

The AR "pistol" is basically a legal alternative to getting a tax stamp. The barrel can be any length and the overall length doesn't matter, but a pistol cannot be readily fired from the shoulder and it cannot have a vertical forward grip of any kind. The popularity of the AR pistol has risen greatly in recent years as people have come to see the practical applications of having a shorter barrel and a more compact weapon and capitalism has done an awesome job of providing options to make an AR pistol more usable (like the Sig Brace, for example).

Welcome to the forums! :)

ETA: As the others say below, the NFA subforum here has a lot of really good information specifically pertaining to SBRs, Suppressors, and other fun stuff: https://www.ar-15.co/forums/110-NFA-Items

All about the "stock" ... That's it

FYI: There is an NFA section on this board that goes through all this info.

In the case of an AR platform, the AR pistol does not have a stock...just a buffer tube. If built from a stripped lower, it can never have a stock put on it nor purchased as a rifle on the paperwork.

The SBR can be owned in Colorado; you must go through the ATF (Form 1 if you make one from another firearm) $200 tax stamp.

I suggest going to the NFA section and start reading through the posts; they are informative.

You're just mad because you paid for the stamp before there were other viable options! [Neene3]

...Don't worry, I did too.
