View Full Version : Hello from Parker - 16 yr resident
Been 30 years since I shot my rifles/shotgun, and just purchased first handgun (G19) this year. Also just purchased a Dillon 550B reloader because I can see where this is an expensive hobby...and I grew up with my uncles (all still in South Texas) doing their own reloading. Getting the rifles/shotgun reconditioned, and then I hope to pass along the same lessons I learned to my adult daughters (better late than never...and I did pass along a lot of OTHER lessons ) and young grandsons.
Most of my questions will probably be around reloading and why I'm consistently pulling to the lower-left center with the handgun. Still close to center, but always low-left of center. And what's up with my spending my youth shooting with my right eye, yet that little eye test telling me I'm cross-dominant?!?

Welcome!
I see you are an amateur meat smoker - me, too. Owned a Big Green Egg for years...just smoked tri-tip this last weekend.

Holy...um, smoke! 51 pages of replies. Take me longer to read than it does to smoke a pork shoulder (which takes about 18 hours).

Change your posts per page to 40 and then it's only 16 pages.
Well let's see how your start is.....
G19 - check
Dillion - Check
You sound like your off to a great start there.
As far as reloading we have some great threads here;
https://www.ar-15.co/forums/103-Ammunition-Ballistics-and-Reloading
Now for the hitting the target on the lower left IMHO it could be
A grip issue, possibly canting your wrist?
Too much finger in the bang button?
Pushing forward a little when firing?
since you figured out your cross dominant maybe your still partially squinting?
Hangun threads are here:

welcome to the addiction!

Definitely a glass half-full guy, Tim...although I definitely read a LOT as I was getting started with my first handgun and reloading press!
Just started experimenting looking through the left eye - definitely awkward after using the right, so I may stick to the right. In regards to the pulling left, most folks say I'm anticipating...possibly a little tightening of the whole grip when tightening on the "very-long-compared-to-rifle" Glock trigger pull. Getting a lot of suggestions for dry-fire - ironic, since I grew up being told to NEVER dry fire.
And I'm sure I'll be checking out the reloading threads - read several before selecting the Dillon 550B over the 650XL or Hornady LNL. Went w/550 over 650 because I hope to use the same press to load 9mm, 6mm, and 6.55mm.
Trying to find a decent price on 115g FMJ 9mm bullets right now - preferably in box of 1000. Checking out Cabela's, Precision Delta, an Midway USA. Going to get some powder/primers local, but also on lookout for the 8# powder.
Don't bother looming at those stores. Start with Xtreme and Bayou Bullets. Google search those names. I don't remember the exact names and am posting mobile or I would have included the links for you.
Hello and welcome!
Enjoy!![Beer]
I did have Xtreme bookmarked, and when I looked at FMJ, they only had 223. Looking at just copper-plated, I do see where they have a box of 500-115g RN for about $39. That's a better price than the others I've seen. Thanks for reminding me to get back over there and be a more diligent in my search.
Welcome!
You missed a Cabela's 9mm Rem UMC sale .22/rd. Here's one for .23/rd @1K rounds shipped. https://www.slickguns.com/product/9mm-umc-ammo-115gr-metal-case-1000-rounds-32999-shipping-natchez-32999 Whoops, just noticed you were asking about boolits. Hells bells, I can hardly reload for .20/rd though.
I'm not setup to reload 9mm yet, but have .45ACP pretty well dialed in although I've been a laggard at any reloading lately.
My goal, with the 9mm, is to get it down to about $0.12/round...that's assuming I'm reusing my own brass several times, of course. Going with the Xtreme pricing, that is about $0.08 for the bullet...think the primers are about $0.03, then the powder...gotta read up to see how much powder to determine the cost, but I've heard folks doing this for about $0.11 - $0.14/round. Beats the price I'm getting at Cabela's for about $0.26/round...although did have some Federal American Eagle for $0.24/round for a few weeks.
Haven't gotten there yet - never could do it as a kid, either. I always close the left eye.
Part of this reloading effort, is so I will not feel as "pinched" doing twice as much rounds as I planned, so I do intend to try with left eye...and with both eyes open. I do favor that Weaver stance, though. Bet the isosceles would be easier for using the left eye.

Welcome to the site from another 550B owner just up the road from you. I know people get into reloading to save money, but to be honest, I've never really added anything up per round cost. I buy stuff that shoots good and is safe. I enjoy my time reloading.

Nice - FYI, I did order from Xtreme. However, they didn't have FMJ, and I ended up ordering the plated...saw a lot of reviews that mentioned people had put several 1,000s downrange with no issues. However, one of my reloading buddies said I needed to pay special care to the crimping stage with the plated ones. Greeeat...wanted it as simple as I could get it with the first batch or so!

Glad to meet you (and everyone who was so gracious to extend a welcome). That is one point I heard - people can reload a lot more "quality" in comparison to just going with the "cheap stuff" factory ammo. I do not expect to have any net savings because I intend to shoot twice as much as my current limit (due to price). Basically, I have too many hobbies, so I have to keep an eye on the budget. And yes, I suspect I will enjoy it. Hard to compare, but I also string my own tennis racquets. Spend $40 to have someone else string, or string with decent stuff...and trust the tensions...for about $8! Plus there is definite pride of ownership when you "do it yourself".
Your buddy is over exaggerating the difficulty of the crimp stage.

Welcome aboard.
If you're looking at TiteGroup as a powder choice, shoot me a PM. Sounds like you're well on your way to getting set up.

Wow - that is a heck of a primer! Thanks.

I am definitely looking at TiteGroup, based upon what I've read, but my first batch may be 2# of Alliant BE-86 from a friend.

Moooooom, Irving's showing off again!
Oh, and welcome from another Parkerite!
Welcome! Always glad to have another member over here on this side of town. We've got a decent concentration going...
Thanks - FYI, a little update:
- I've got the Dillon 550B all set up and running. I've taken 105 rounds to the range (started w/5...did a little praying before I pulled the trigger...then took the next 100). So far, I'm 104/105 with good rounds. I knew that one round was suspect because of a slight notch in the primer, but I wanted to see if it was an issue. I'm running about 5.4 grains - and about 1.15" long on the 9mm.
- I also bought the Cabela's Tumbler (model 400, I think)...the brass, coupled with the plated bullets, comes out looking better than a lot of the factory stuff I've purchased.
- I've gone "all-in" on embracing the cross dominance. Unbelievable - I wonder if that has always been the case. I'm definitely shooting much tighter patterns closer to the center of the target.
