View Full Version : Colorado school district to arm security officers with semiautomatic rifles
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/04/19/colorado-school-district-to-arm-security-officers-with-semiautomatic-rifles.html
My only issue with this is that it seems like they over paid for these rifles.
A Colorado school district is set to arm its security force with 10 semiautomatic rifles, FOX31 (http://kdvr.com/2016/04/18/douglas-county-purchases-rifles-for-school-security/) reported.
Douglas County School District Director of Safety and Security Rich Payne said he bought the Bushmaster long rifles for a total of $12,300. The district neither discussed nor voted on the purchase, The Denver Post (http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_29783261/douglas-county-schools-issue-semiautomatic-rifles-security-staff) reported.
p.s. sorry if this is a re-post, didn't see it anywhere

$1230/rifle delivered doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility. What did they buy? It doesn't say in the linked article. Could include some sort of optics, could be ACRs.
My only issue is that they bought Bushmasters. :D

All I can say is good job dougco. No use in the bg being better armed than good guys that may respond. I hope they have contact with le, so there's no confusing good guys and bad guys when le arrives.
I saw this posted in the "NextDoor" app for my area. I chuckled as the poster was "concerned" over it. Most people didn't agree with him and liked the idea.
Just funny that they are ok with cops bringing them to the school 10 minutes after things start but to have them on-site and ready is a "bad" idea.
Waiting for Liberal heads to explode...

Now I have two issues.

I saw that this morning. I hope 10 years from now the anti-gunners will be able to bitch about it being a waste of money because the rifles were never used except during qualification practice. Aside from that, I'm pleasantly surprised this got past the new liberal school board.

My only issue with "Bushmaster" is the media connotation that it has unwittingly gained. Any time a long gun is used in a crime, the media outlets all jump for joy and pop open the champagne if they can include the name "Bushmaster".
Good job, DougCo.

The school board was not aware of purchase or planned deployment. I suspect that this decision may be put on hold for some time as the school board is brought up to speed. This is a pretty major thing to do announce and do without the approval of your school board.

I wondered if they bought the gas piston M4's?
Local Yuppie moms are up in arms:

I think it also has to do with the fact that they hate the school board in an apocalyptic way.

The local media Libs work with the teacher's union to get negative stories out there about DougCo (and formerly JeffCo). They get posted on Chalkbeat and it's like a dog whistle.
For some reason big city Libs are very interested in what we do in DougCo.
Of course, when DPS continues to have significantly more school violence it won't be discussed. When a DougCo employee abuses a Sam's Club membership card it's front page news for almost a week. DPS recently had a school board member with a child abuse conviction and the Democrat Post ran the story for a couple of hours.
We can't see that Facebook group unless we're members, but I imagine it's much like this. Minor language.

The first thing I noticed when I read the article the other day was use of the term Long Rifle. Used it repeatedly. Classic.

Right there with you, hope it was a big waste of money.
I have to ask though, are these guys going to be limited to 15 rounds like us, or are they "Special" and get to use 30 rounders?

Just guessing, but if the deputy who first engaged the shooters with a handgun at 60 yards had used an AR instead of a handgun, the results would have been much different.

Yup how soon people forget. Cops waited hours while people bled out. No a response and mothers upset.
Go to the page and don't forget to take the poll: http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_29783261/douglas-county-schools-issue-semiautomatic-rifles-security-staff?source=most_viewed
My understanding of how this came out is someone heard from a cop, presumably Dougco Sheriff, that the School bought rifles, then someone filed an open records request. Hens with nothing to do but cluck, until one of their kids gets killed.

Good guys with guns to stop bad guys with guns. The NRA answer to school safety wasn't such a crazy idea after all.
The pricing isn't crazy. There may have also been equipment to secure the weapons in the schools, etc.
One of the articles even says that the guns won't be stored at the schools. So now I'm wondering the point at all.

The safety officers will take the rifles with them when they're not at the school.

I find it stupid that other districts have said publicly. "our officers are not armed" and a few other key details that they probably shouldn't say.
Security workers in Denver, Aurora and Jefferson County school districts carry handguns, and security staffers in Cherry Creek are unarmed.

Let me start off with stating that I'm for is 100%, but...
(1). As was already stated in the FB post, why is it an "assault weapon" when you or I buy it but it's a "semi-automatic long rifle" when it's a school district or .gov based entity buys it?
I have to ask though, are these guys going to be limited to 15 rounds like us, or are they "Special" and get to use 30 rounders?
(2). Valid question. I'm also wondering what sort of training/practice will be required of those who will carry them? More importantly, are these "Security officers" (translated: not LEO's) POST certified, or will each user have to go through a background check to be able to carry it? After all, just because you or I already own/carry a firearm doesn't mean we get to have someone transfer another firearm to us without a background check; right? (Yes, I get that under CO law a short-term transfer can occur w/o a background check, but that's not intended to cover regular/daily transfers.)
They oughta buy some heavy duty body armor too! Maybe have a PTA bake sale if they really care...
(3). Sounds good, but bale sales are a no-go these days as the foods aren't prepared under Dept. Of Health oversight. The .gov has to protect us from ourselves after all.
From what I heard on the news piece this morning, all of the school safety officers are former LEOs.

So...how long till one of the kids eyes a security officer wrong and finds himself looking at the wrong end of that rifle?

I've never drawn on anyone who eyed me wrong. I'm familiar with the phrase. "If looks could kill," but in my experience it is always hands that do the killing. Watch the hands. [Coffee]

Plain and simple - It's a step in the right direction. Douglas County Schools and Sheriff have been doing things smarter than most in this area. DoCo Deputies now do their computer work in a school rather than in their cars in a parking lot. This very simple and no cost mitigation step is very smart. With the addition of district security officers carrying long guns they have moved even more forward in their thinking. Most of these security officers are good to go people, some are eeh. Training is the key, as long as they are trained and work with the local LE in their response, this will be an effective program.
Is it a solution to the problem, no. But they are doing things better and sometimes better is good enough.

It takes the schools off of the easy target list and puts them on the think twice list. Definitely is a step in the right direction.
Pretty unlikely.
I wouldnt bet on it...what with students getting thrown out of desks and on the floor just for refusing to leave the room when told...and it seems to be escelating lately.
Every officer I've ever encountered at a school has always been armed. Guns have been available to point at students for a long time. 10 additional rifles will hardly make a difference.
I wouldnt bet on it...what with students getting thrown out of desks and on the floor just for refusing to leave the room when told...and it seems to be escelating lately.
And most school security and school resource officers have seen what has happened when they have thrown students out of desks and on the floor. Terminations, criminal prosecutions, and civil suits have an interesting way of changing the behavior of people who are otherwise law abiding and have much to lose.
In a related matter, I would not work in a government school because the expectations for school security are not realistic when you know what the political climate is within the government schools and the bureaucracies that manage those institutions.
One of the articles even says that the guns won't be stored at the schools. So now I'm wondering the point at all.
This. It's great they have a better way to defend students and themselves but if the gun's in the car, the SRO may have a long run to go get it. Maybe I missed it in the story.

But...They're OK with whistles and No means NO classes. In the very near future i would not be surprised IF schools required LE, Security and other Threat deterrent folks to carry Release forms on them. This way IF a shooting started, The Armed response would need release forms from students. Allowing them to be defended providing their safe space was not violated.
The TL:DR version.
Can't have a gun if someone's not comfortable with it. No matter how many dead students were around them.
