My wife has been very busy with ancestry and found direct lineage to a founding family in Bound Brook, NJ. Her 6 time great grandfather was eldest in his family and ran the family farm. One of his younger brother owned a home that housed one of the 6 generals fighting in the continental army. The family were from the Netherland's and left NY because they did not like the NY values back then. She arranged to take us back to NJ during the weekend they celebrate the Battle of Bound Brook and visit the old family farm, the old home and some cemeteries.
The trip began as most do with the TSA shuffle. Going to NJ meant no carry. I locked my knife in my checked baggage and took my regular stuff in my go bag minus the multi tool like a always do. Includes snacks, battery backup, power cords, crock pot liners (protect eyes and breathing from smoke for 5-10 minutes), couple of magazines (for reading and rolled up make a formidable weapon), tablet, flashlight and pen. I have traveled like this for years and have never had a problem. Well this time my pen got flagged and they proceeded to take apart my whole bag. The TSA agent stated my pen could be used as a kubaton. Yes to be fair it is an UZI tactical pen, black, aluminum, scary looking. Never been a problem for years and I explained to him any pen could be used for the same purpose. So could a stylus that anyone else has for their electronic tablets or my thumb. Unfortunately we were in a hurry so I let it go. Needed an excuse to order a new on anyway with the handcuff key but giving fair warning to other travelers out there. Next time it gets checked in the lock box on my carry on. The TSA is continuing to go full retard. I did submit a complaint but probably to deaf ears. Good thing he has never seen a demonstration on how effective rolled up magazines are and how hard they hit.
Anyway the rest of the trip was very nice. The weather was threatening rain but it managed to hold off for the whole reenactment last Saturday. They got the special permits to flash off a cannon many times. The men there took full advantage and had a great time waking up the welfare recipients.

I may have also quite effectively seen the only 100 or so men left in NJ that either participated or were actually there watching.

By the lack of youngsters and the changing demographics of this area I wonder who will keep and respect the history of our country. My neighbor was from the same area and said we need to eat at Stan Chitch's. Good pie.

The old Staat's House. The family added on as they became more wealthy. Built in late 1700's.

My rental car I thought I would try to blend in so I went with a PRIUS. Funny thing was they were no happier with me and very often communicated with me as I tried to figure out can I turn right on red or not. Seems they had no clear rhyme or reason but the locals were more than happy to let me know. Funny thing is the PRIUS does not move that fast and that lead to more communicating. I just smiled and turned up my radio. Good thing we did not have to drive that much our hotel was very close to our destinations and to eat.

We did go visit an old farm that is now a wildlife sanctuary. The Duke Farm was very nice with easy paths to walk or ride a bike on. Rich history and they have a live Bald Eagle cam going for a pair of young eaglets. On a tram ride a couple of young girls asked about my scary COAR-15 patch on my jacket and if I hunted defenseless animals. Wow did they have a lot to learn and I calmly explained the circle of life and how the animals that I hunt have an easier time in their death than the many deer rood kills I saw in NJ because of lack of culling of your heard. They were nice enough and never thought about that. I also saw interesting trees that looked like they were wrapped in multicam. Turns out a quick search identified them as sycamores. Look up images they are cool.
All in all it was a great time and I loved the history. My wife especially liked it because she could tangibly see and touch her own family's history. So much of our early history happened in this part of NJ and the people living there are clueless. Hope you enjoy the pics and short videos. Wet my appetite to see larger events.
