View Full Version : Kidney Stones
how many of you guys/gals ever passed a kidney stone? I have been dealing with sense Wednesday night without passing this bastard. the pain comes and goes and peaks hitting worse at night. already been to the ER and paid 200.00, do not really want to go back.
Holy moley! I guess you don't need me to point out that it seems like you're having a rough year, but I am Master of the Obvious.
Hope you're able to put this past you soon! Prayers and positive thoughts are headed your way. Love ya' man!
Yup . . . have gone through it twice. The pain is incredible and I like to think I have a pretty high tolerance. After my second, I went to see my dad's urologist and figured out what was causing them, so have been fortunate enough to avoid a relapse thus far. I would imagine I'll get another somewhere down the road, but trying to keep them at bay.
Is this your first? About all you can do is try to stay hydrated at this point and manage the pain as best as you can. Did they send you home with pain meds? Flomax can help in opening up the plumbing to pass the stone if that's an option.
EDIT: This may or may not help . . . can't really hurt. The most common stones, by far, are calcium oxalate. You can try drinking fluids that are high in citrate and that might help to break up the stone a little. Best source is lemon juice--like straight lemon juice. Drink a couple cups of it and chase with lots of water. Other option is lemonade, even the sugar free kind. I drink the lemonade regularly and do the straight lemon juice every few weeks to try and keep the stones from forming.

Gave birth to one about 12 years ago, spent the evening in the ER, definitely a no fun event. Started with Vicodin, that did not touch the pain, Percocet finally helped. Never did catch it in the strainer, but have been fortunate to have avoided any since then. If it is of a certain type and large enough, they may have to sonically try to break it into smaller pieces. Good luck and hope it passes soon.

Rappaflo or FlowMax to keep the prostate open, percocet every few hours, because once the pain starts, you cannot catch up to it.
Calcium Oxalate as they say above ^ - mine I think turned out to be caused by too much vitamin C, nuts, and other various food items I was using to keep healthy.

also don't mess with ultra sounds, just get the dang CT scan and find that sucker. What a waste of time that was for me. (and money)
The lemonaid helps. Also vineagar....couple large spoonfuls each day...apple cyder or rice type.
About once a year.
I buy lemon juice at Costco...
The instructions above really help.
I've had and passed a couple of them. My only advice is to drink tons of water. The more fluids you pass through the plumbing the better the chances of flushing out the little rocks.

If it were me I'd get some organic lemons. Real lemons are better than the concentrated crap. I'd cut one in half and squeeze both halves into 12 oz of lukewarm water and drink. I would do that first thing in the AM and once in the late afternoon. I would also avoid foods with sugar and I would drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Might taste kind of acidic if you're not used to it.

Potassium citrate is a fairly straightforward solution for some kidney stone chemistries.
Also, if this is your first . . . be vigilant in straining when you take a leak and try to catch that sucker. Take it to a urologist and have it tested to find out what kind of stone it is. They can also do things like urine collection tests and blood tests to help determine if it's diet related. The huge mistake I made with my first was just going to my GP and he was less than thorough with the whole process. He said it was calcium oxalate, but just said "yeah, well . . . drink a lot of water from now on and you should be fine."
With the second one, I got the full-blown workup done and the urologist gave me a ton of info. I was eating a metric crapload of stuff I should have been avoiding (almonds, chocolate protein powder, spinach, other high oxalate foods). They also gave me the information on the citrate intake.

^ yep
Vegetables that contain high levels of oxalate includerhubarb, okra, leeks, spinach, beets, and Swiss chard. To reduce how much oxalate you get, avoid almonds, cashews, and peanuts, as well as any soyproducts. Grains such as Bran Flakes, Fiber One,wheat germ, and quinoa are also higher oxalate foods.
I'd have to suggest these folks too; Urology R Us - as they are known in the medical field locally.

One more bit of trivial knowledge for calcium oxalate stones. If you do eat something moderate or high in oxalates . . . eat something with some calcium in it. A small glass or milk, small piece of cheese, etc. Sounds counter-intuitive, since the stones are calcium binding with oxalates. But if you have the calcium with the oxalate when you eat, the calcium (in theory) binds to the oxalate in your gut and so it doesn't go to the kidneys where the stones form. At least that's the advice I got from the Dr.

I got them once per year without fail for about 10 years, then about 4 years ago had one big enough (12mm) there was no chance of passing it so they decided to do surgery. After surgery they told me my left kidney still had a bunch of them in it, but so far I haven't had any more issues.
When I told my grandpa about how big mine were he told me to quit being a pussy, he had one over an inch that he was still dealing with.

Just went through it 3 weeks ago... and 2 weeks before that... Get it tested, there are different kinds of stones- mine were uric acid crystals (gout)
I (literally) feel your pain. The last ones were stuck- doc sent me to the ER, managed to pass them after IV delivered NSAIDs and painkiller.
but I'm still tender- have to really watch what I eat. Considering giving up eating entirely sometimes.
Almost got me a medical release from this temporary work assignment they have me on, but missed it by 2 days.

I have gout and the possibility of stones is a concern. Are you treating your gout with Allopurinol or Uloric?

Haven't yet, have been trying to adjust diet to see what triggers are... You ask 3 "experts" what causes gout and you'll get 3 different stories.

Had them so bad I had to have them broken up via sound waves. The worst part of that was they installed a stent. This stent was installed while I was under, but then it had to be removed... You are NOT under for that part of the process.
It's removed exactly like you think it would be.

I hear ya. Thanks for the info. My biggest trigger is not dietary, it's stress. Allopurinol was giving me bad attacks, but Uloric has worked fantastically well. Unfortunately, it's expensive.

Uh yea that is no understatement. They made me leave my stent in for over a week and it caused so much pain I could hardly walk. The minute they removed it I felt like a new man and could walk upright for the first time since my surgery.
The actual removal process, yea they got all hooked on to it, then the dr asked the nurse if she was ready, he said on 3 lets go, 1,2...wham they both yanked like they were starting a chain saw. I guarantee my ass came a foot off the table. Thanks for the warning asshole.

On the stent thing. I have had two of them which were painful while they were in there especially when taking a leak. My wife pulled both of them out for me and was a piece of cake on both removals. Each was in for a week or more. I had zero pain in their removal. Apparently everyone has a different sensations when these things are removed.

You talking about a stent or a catheter?
My stent was between my kidney and my bladder. There is no way my wife could have removed it, it required an "invasive" process that I would rather forget. I described it's removal to my wife exactly like RCCrawler did, literally the same words.

I think I will just drink more of the lemon soda...
Passes 6 of those suckers over a 6 week period. The first ER Dr. diagnosed me as having a muscle spasm, nurse said kidney stones. So my wife insisted she, the Dr., check further so she did an ultra scan of my right kidney, the problem was on my left, then did the left side when I pointed out the difference between my right and left sides. She found 5 more stones and sent me home with a mild pain killer which didn't work passing the next three so I went to a different ER and the Dr. there said kidney stones and gave me morphine and FlowMax to expand my ureter and a drug to stop the incredible vomiting I experienced every time I passed one. Now I don't drink 24 cups of coffee a day but drink water and lemon or lime in water instead. Sure miss my coffee but not enough to chance stones again.

Yeah that is one thing that having kidney stones did for me, I am completely off any and all caffeinated beverages. I used to drink extreme amounts of cola, but now it is nothing but water, juice and milk because i don't want to risk getting more stones. I actually find anything with caffeine too bitter now.

I was talking about a couple stents going from the left kidney down to the bladder. Both removed by my Mrs. A couple catheters but those were both removed by professionals who had the equipment to deflat the saline solution filled balloon. These were all painless in removal although does sound like could be somewhat painful.

Maybe your stent was different from mine. The only way to remove mine was to insert a scope up the urethra into the bladder, fish around for the little curly que removal thingy, and perform the aforementioned chainsaw starting technique.

Both of my stents had a string attached to the bottom end of the stents. About four inches of string protruded from old peter. Glad it was this method rather than having to go "up there" to search and grab the rubber stent. These stents did the expected job of making certain the ureter didn't close up. My procedures were accomplished at the Albuquerque VA hospital last Spring and I couldn't have asked for any better treatment than those VA folks provided.

Damn it, after getting them on a pretty much yearly basis for a long time, then having surgery to remove them 4 years ago I had been free of them until this morning.
I got called into work at about 1:45am, then got home at about 2:45am. I laid down and within minutes it hit me, that all too familiar pain. I jumped in the shower trying to get some relief, that didn't happen so I told the wife I had to go to the hospital. Arrived and after 40 minutes was given a dose of dilaudid, it kicked in and took the edge off for less than 5 minutes and the pain returned. I was then in the worst pain I have ever felt in my life for another 45 minutes before they gave me a double dose of dilaudid then sent me in for an ultrasound. By the time I got back from the ultrasound that had worn off again. Doc then hit me with a dose of tramadol which seemed to work. Once my pain level decreased he sent me home.
Here I lay 2 oxy's in and also taking flomax. Pain level is at a 4 or 5 now, let's hope this doesn't take long I have a ton of stuff I need to get done this week.
Doc then hit me with a dose of tramadol... aka Damn-it-all

Don't remember parking or going in. They ran a few tests and gave me some pain Meds, ultra sound and X-ray show no stone. Blood tests show my kidneys are not functioning. Sent me to the ER now. Just got home, after many drugs I am pain free. CT scan showed a 3mm, a 4mm, and some smaller in the right kidney which is the one hurting, also showed several 4mm's and more in the left kidney. They reran the kidney function test and it still showed issues that they can't explain, but said possibly caused from being dehydrated. They are scheduling surgery now to remove stones from both sides in the next few days. Will also re run the kidney function test in the next couple days to make sure that fixes itself.
Until then I'm supposed to pop perc's and lay in bed. Can't stand this drugged feeling dosing in and out all day.

Had surgery lastnight all went well. Bladder hurts like hell today.
I can also confirm they do put stints in with strings to pull them out. Before the surgery he told me he was going to try to put strings on both of them as he was going in both sides, but if he had to dialate the tube they'd have to be the bigger tube that requires Dr. Removal. I got one of each, so one I get the joy of pulling myself on Monday, the other I get an office visit in 7-10 days.
Wife suggested we type the string to a doorknob and slam it.

Well RCCrawler, you jinxed me. Woke up yesterday morning at 2 AM with that unwelcome but familiar feeling. Took a couple of hours, but finally the pain had worked back to front and seemed like it was gonna drop, but then a second one started... then a third, then a fourth. Finally, about 2 PM, seemed like there was no more, so I hit the sack and tried to catch some ZZZs. Two hours later, after what can only be described fitful dozing, I realize that the the first one actually got stuck and the others were stacked behind it. So I decide to go to the ER.
Sure enough, that is exactly what happened. Admitted me last night, will have surgery tomorrow. Posting this from the hospital room. Kinda blew my 4th of July plans.
And yeah, this will mean more stents... Ugh!
At least the drugs are good!

Thats no good. I finally ended my 6 week ordeal on Thursday. Turns out the DR made me leave the one stent in an entire month after the surgery. That was no fun, pissed blood the entire time.
Right after ter he removed the stent he said I know you probably don't want to hear this but we should probably do surgery again soon. Aparently he couldn't get into my right kidney because my tube is full of scar tissue from passing so many stones. The tube was only 1mm. That was the reason he put a big tube in and left it for a month, to get the tube back stretched out.
I I told him we'll wait a bit on another surgery.
Hopefully everything goes goes well for you.

Looks like I may be heading into a similar ordeal. Has surgery this morning, doc said 90% chance of success. Well guess I hit my inside straight draw, because I fell into that 10% so it was a worthless surgery. They did succeed at getting a stent in, of course it's the kind I have to have removed the hard way. And yes, every bathroom event results in me pissing razor blades right now. At least I got to go home, so there's that.

Any advice on how to avoid them?
I was was given a list a mile long of foods to avoid, and then told that even if I follow the list to a tee I could get them because the biggest factor are your genes.
My grandpa gets them like crazy, and my dad used to.
Drinking lots of water, and water with lemon or lemonade made with real lemon juice is the best. The citrate in lemon will actually help breakdown stones you have. I've also read studies of crystal light lemonade being good for them.
My dr also said its not how much you drink, but how much you pee. He said you should pee between 2.5-3.5 liters per day, no matter what.
My stones are made of calcium and oxilate, oxilate is found in all dark sodas which I used to drink a ton of, then when I had this surgery 4 years ago I quit and was fine, but I started drinking it again a year ago, now the stones popped back up.
I haven't had a single dark soda in 6 weeks, and have been trying to drown myself with water.

FWIW, the stone that is stuck (still) is 1 cm. No idea how it's gonna come out. For right now, I am managing with near zero pain but that is living on Percocet, and that can't last forever. I, like RCCrawler, am drowning myself in water, and just biding my time until I can go see the dick doc.
