Ever get asked by the wife to do something that in and of itself is no big deal but you're kinda doing something else and really don't wanna stop for her little chore? Yeah...so I stopped anyways just because doing it would take less time than fighting about it. Or so I thought.
She unpacked a box and found some decorative metal light switch plate covers that she wanted in the bedroom. 3 of them. Sure, fine. What I'm doing isn't that important anyways. And it's 3 switch covers. What is that? 5 mins tops?
Go to garage and get phillips screwdriver for new plate screws. Go back to garage and get slotted screw driver because old plates have slotted screws. First cover on in less than 2 mins. Nice. 2nd cover on under 4 mins elapsed time (took an extra 30-45 seconds because it was a 3-holer). Final plate. Fuck!
The last plate was a 2-switch cover that wouldn't fit it's intended switch because the metal bear on top was facing the wrong direction (he was facing left...that should've been a hint to me). The head of the bear didn't clear the trim around the door. Not even close. I almost just put the damn thing on upside down but knew she'd notice.
So, putting on a light switch cover involved the follow:
removing the old cover.
finding my Dremel with cutoff wheel and removing the bear by cutting through the original welds
grinding the attach points of the bear and plate to smooth out the welds/cuts
finding my welder (still waiting to put all my stuff in the shop because the floor isn't cured/painted)
getting to my welder
welding the bear on to the plate
fixing a small hole in the plate because the welder was set too high
cleaning up the welds
finding a suitable bluing/rusting chemical in my gun stuff to roughly match the finish on the plate
putting everything away
mounting the plate with the bear facing the proper direction...to the right.
2 hours after beginning the 5 minute project was finished.
I told her I was done. Her only comment was, "Finally. I asked you to do that like 2 hours ago."
