View Full Version : Any interest in an NFA trading post?
Just curious if there'd be any interest in an NFA trading post. Some of the other states have pretty active local boards where people buy/sell NFA items, and avoid the extra fees that come with GB or some of the other national boards. The legal requirements make it hard for a lot of items if you're not a dealer - selling used suppressors isn't always a great return on investment, as most know. But I know there are a lot of guys here who either secretly or otherwise still have machine guns and short-barreled guns, etc. Just curious if I'm the only one looking for more local contacts/deals... are there any other local/regional boards with an active NFA trade?
Another option I suppose is I could start a running discussion thread for local deals in the NFA section of the board, with no trading there, just a "heads up" thread.
I think it is something we could do, but will need resounding replies to this thread stating an active interest before we even considered it. Not just a "could be nice" but "I would actively use it, and currently have one/some items to post" kind of replies just for consideration.
There would be a good bit of logistics for the staff team to figure out to make sure we moderate/message it appropriately, and to boot: any trading post section is harder to moderate than the rest of the board combined. It would need to be fleshed out as a well used and beneficial section before we discuss any implications or hindrances with having such a section.
Not trying to be a debbie-downer here. Just laying it out like it is to run a board like this in these days and ages.
The NFA crowd is growing but I still don't see enough NFA items to require it's own for sale section. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what's being presented. Otherwise, I like the idea of a sticky in the NFA sub-forum for "deals". A lot of the NFA items seem to be life time items for people or items that can be sold in parts to eliminate the NFA part (i.e. AR uppers) so the regular trade zone works fine for used items.

I sure dont see enough nfa traffic to warrant Another section. We have made many different sections on this forum in the past....after a little while with little to no participation they end up getting combined back into wherever they were before.
Frankly, I don't see what the National Farm Act has to do with anything we are interested in. It's own thread? Hardly!

I would love to see one but not sure how much traffic it would see.
I like the idea, you know what I've been trying to source. I've spent what time I could on the non local boards and I hate them.
but it sounds like it'll just be too much work for the mods.

If a forum member has been unable to sell his Used suppressor for who knows how long. What would a NFA TP section do the ones already in place do differently.
There's also the people not familiar how to sell an IN state NFA item person to person. No matter how many times someone ask (again) in every forum besides the correct one.
Which relates to my first sentence, considering the OP of that For Sale item Had no clue how to do an In state Person - Person sale.
Just put NFA in the subject line and call it good.

Whats wrong with the Buyer Intel section in the TP forums?
Hell there's links to CL listings for mc's WHICH again IMO really has no business linking someones shit not a forum member, in the first place.
Would a sticky in the firearms section do the trick? I like to look at what I can't afford.

IMO market too small to bother...
That might be because it is sometimes hard to find local NFA items that are not in a shop at full or 'sale price'. The idea is not a bad one. I know that several times when I have been in the purchase mode, there are few places to look outside a shop that I trust. This forum is a place I put more trust in when it comes to guns than any other. A few NFA items pop up in the trader section but it does not seem to be encouraged (not to say it is necessarily dis-couraged). What the op is proposing 'may' be a good path forward. To address the mods issues, maybe make the entry level a bit harder (more posts, a page of good reviews, etc). This is also a place that common knowledge can be 'sticky-ed' to answer common questions. Maybe as a subset of the current NFA thread. The fact is NFA is still considered 'exotic' to most and that includes gun owners. It obviously does not need to be or IMO should be. The more people we get into it the more power we have to fight ATF rules that don't make sense. An NFA buying section would make them more accessible to the 'old pros' and newbies at the same time. That benefits us all. I was out at GGC a few weeks ago. Old guy was shooting some reload workups. I get out my 338 Lapua, he takes one look and he says 'I'll be out of here in a minute'. He had no clue about NFA. We started talking and when he saw that my 'big bore' was quieter than his .223 he was amazed and said he was very interested in getting his own but was worried about the price. An NFA sales area could be just what he needs to get started. Recently there was a 30 cal suppressor on here for $400. A pretty big discount for most suppressors in that caliber. If we can get more of that going............

Hey, I like the idea of 30 cal suppressors for $400.
Hell, even my po' broke ass could maybe swing a $400 suppressor.....

nobody can find it because its listed in the wrong section. Serialized items such as Suppressors go in the Firearms Section.
This statement and those before it kinda goes towards my point. There should probably be a distinct section for NFA for that reason.

It's used and should have sold by now, considering it's what 30 days? from original for sale post.. UNFORTUNATELY there's confusion (for some) when it comes to intra-state NFA items.
Until there's clarity from a seller (in general) how they want to sell a USED NFA ITEM. There's going to be items still for sale.
The business' selling NFA items are in the INDUSTRY PARTNERS SECTION. Not too hard to browse their threads to see what's for sale.
How many USED NFA items have been posted in the last year? Unless it's been double digits, with SOLD PLEASE DELETE comments, why bother?

And frankly that is the last place I would go looking for nfa items.

There are other, better, places for NFA buying and selling. There are the well known NFA boards, and then the smaller, much more select - have to know someone - boards where you can buy things like 40mm toys, registered side plates, sear kits, trigger packs, and three holers flow like water from people who do nothing but deal/manf in the NFA trade every day. I don't know if COAR has enough of a pull to draw in the real collectors to make it worth the upkeep. My suggestion would be to see how many NFA things have been in the trading post over the last 12 months and then gauge from there -- but I am betting I already know the answer. Now if we had some more SOTs and FFL 7/9/10s on here, that would be different.
But ya know, you need one of those special "Class Three Type Licenses" to even talk about this stuff, otherwise the ATF will come into your house at 0200 without a search warrant and shoot your dog. Luckily I have my license.

There are more vault/storage container sales here than NFA, no need for a sub section for either... yet imo.

Appreciate the feedback J! To be honest, I hadn't even thought about the logistics yet - was just curious if there was any interest...

Yep, honestly, that's what I expected. Just was wondering if interest had grown enough yet to where I was wrong. It's not even the NFA items themselves, it's all the other stuff too. Shipping in a MG42 tripod was much more of a PITA than the actual gun itself. Talk about a heavy, expensive SOB to pack and ship...

I've yet to see more than 1 possibly 2 non- ffl nfa items come up for sale. The parts & accessories is somewhat of a niche market. The 2 lahti mags I posted 4 sale some time back. Not even a, hey I might know someone with an interest. Other forums, a few tire kickers, telling me they had no value. But they'd be willing to "take them off my hands", If I'd give them away.
Perhaps a s subsection of the Firearms for Sale as a beta test might work.
Logistics wise, who would moderate the forum ? Who with a serious knowledge of all aspects of the NFA game, has that much spare time to do it. Or even want the headache, OOPS responsibility ?

I would be interested in a forum or sub forum as a trial. I have considered selling one of my suppressors and wouldn't mind seeing what else is available in area.

I don't think it would add value. The time is too dilated. I don't currently own any NFA items, I am interested but I am well aware of wait time. I would not generally check or post in such a forum except rarely.

I agree with most of the posts above. The amount of items posted would be too few to warrant a separate section.
Fair enough, sounds like my dreams of a Colorado NFA trading paradise won't happen this year. I'll just have to go cry tears of brass and steel to make myself feel better. :)

Side note, that tarp was absolutely useless.
Man, I'd be CRAZY happy if we had the traffic and buyers/sellers for a full NFA trading post. I'd dream of pissing on Hillary's pillow before she sleeps at night.
I sincerely hope we one day have the traffic to make it a good idea, but right now it just isn't.
I get the feeling of people before the iPad. Why would we want that, there could not possibly be enough interest.

So much depends on the "will" of politics. It'll be interesting to see where we end up in 8-9 years. The growth of the suppressor market has been pretty awesome to watch.

Yes it is. Does any forum member not own at least 2-3 suppressors ?
Maybe you (the OP) should do a poll to gauge what the ownership of NFA items - forum members there is. Based on the number of replies there's not a lot of interest in a separate 4 Sale forum.
Maybe I'm missing what you're saying - a poll for what reason? I think we all decided it's not a good idea at this point to have a separate thread, myself included.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts/feedback!

And with the last few comments I think we're good to close this thread.
Again, it's a good idea whose time has not yet come; perhaps some day it will.
