So,
* No wise a$$ comments from Bert please*

For the last 45 minutes or so I've been putting up with the idiots up the street go full bore down the street on one of those death machine rice rockets, turn around at the stop sign and come full bore back up the street.
Realize this is a residential street with children of all ages from toddlers to late teens.
Finally, I had enough & I went out and read them the riot act about being total idiots! to knock it off and to slow the f**k down.

Now the wife is upset and thinks that I should have minded my own business and not gone out and said anything.

What says the Peanut gallery ?

I've almost initiated a fist fight yelling at some douche speeding up and down the street. There is a line, and once someone crosses it, you're not an asshole. I'm with you. Tell your wife to grow a pair*.

*Don't really tell her that.

Funny I had a very similar talk this weekend with the local Harley assholes.

I've done, and will continue to do, the same. If you didn't string up a clothesline across the street, you were being kind.

Hey buddy, safety comes first. If you got them to stop, you kept them safe as well as untold others that frequent the street. How much worse would you have felt if they had wrecked into a car and hurt someone else (or themselves, but from the sound of that... gene pool cleaner?) had you not said something. I had a similar situation recently and didn't say anything. Nothing came of it, but I've come to regret it sense.

How much did this move to paradise cost? [Coffee]

If the riot act doesn't work, start calling the local constabulary. Cops love crotch rockets. BTDT. I hate calling cops for anything but I will not deal with assholes past the first "howdy, we are neighbors, not play nice" meeting.

You're good. When I lived in Garden Grove (not a really good area of it) there was three guys that were consistently drive their shitty little modified Hondas and Mazdas with loud exhausts down the street. I started yelling at them and even followed one down the street to his destination and read him the riot act. The guy that lived there got all up in my face about telling off his friend so I lit into him too as he had two kids the same age as mine and what kind of asshole he was to defend the jerk that would skid his car around the street in the "hood". Then there were four of them surrounding me and they were threatening to kick my ass.
Now there are several neighbors outside seeing what all the yelling was about and pretty soon I have like ten other guys coming in on my side and their wives are screaming at the dickhead drive to get out and stay out if he can't drive safely through the hood. One of the father guys started writing down the license numbers of all the cars parked at the guy's house.
i had yelled at these guys before but when the neighbors, that previously told me to back off from these gangster types, came out and stood up, the problem stopped, all these guys drove very nicely from then on and one even waved to me and smiled to show me he was being a responsible drive.

It is OK to speak up in these situations.

I video taped a guy once doing this - in the school zone here at the house. He did turn around and made all kinds of threats, on video. I did call PD, and the officer asked why I was out video taping him?

I was actually video taping my property and house for insurance purposes, if something were to happen I need proof of what I owned and how it looked.

He didn't believe me. But couldn't say anything about it. (this is before video capable cell phones)

I like to go fast, but there are areas it's not appropriate. Yes, I've been that guy too in my younger days and today know it was stupid.

We've got an ongoing Nextdoor website thread going here in my area. Crotch Rockets flying up 6th ave on warm summer nights. I bet their hitting 150+. All the liberals are whining about the noise and think they are doing 75 or 80mph!!! OMG! Local PD isn't doing much because they know they can't catch em or chase them down. Amazing the stupidity in that thread.

Oh you absolutely say something. How you go about it and the level you wish to take it to. That's up to you.

WE had some trash can exhaust wanna be drift cars continually come up and down the block. Asked them nice to slow it down coming around the corner, etc. One day the passenger decided to yell out FUCK YOU OLD MAN after someone said to slow down. 24 hours later they chose to move out of the neighborhood.

As others have said, if it's a matter of safety and children could be at risk, then yes, you should talk to them. No, that doesn't make you an asshole, it means you a a reasonable human being.

Park a car on either side of your driveway.

When they come rolling, roll a couple balls down the drive and into the street.

Doesn't hurt to get a little video and have a polite conversation with the local constable.

Commence the brow beating and dial 911 if they get belligerent.

I didn't tolerate that shit when my kids were younger and still don't.

If they are legitimately being dumb then they need someone to inform them of that fact. The police around here will do nothing. Sometimes a reasonable ass chewing will put an end to it.

In my younger days I got yelled at lots for having a loud car, and not much else. It didn't have a positive effect. People in my neighborhood were not the most reasonable, and how you go about it makes a huge differance. Getting yelled at for going the speed limit is pretty lame no matter what people think you are doing. The scariest drivers here are the middle age housewives who pay no attention, not dumb teenagers. Teaching kids that cars hurt seems to be a lost art in these parts.

I grew up on a very busy main street in the neighborhood. Had speeders all the time, I'm talking 45-60MPH in a residential neighborhood. I will never forget the old man across the street that just DGAF! Dude filled a 55 gallon drum with water and rolled it right out in front of one of those punks! Speeding stopped after that! Wasn't his fault, he accidentally tipped it over. If the DB that hit was going the speed limit he could have stopped just fine.

I can say I was not the smartest in my younger days, and rode one of those rockets. I finally calmed down and speed isnt an issue anymore. I did have a jeep t bone a mustang in front of my house. They figure the jeep was doing 50-60mph on a residential street. The jeep went through my cinder block wall around my yard, though my fountain and little pond and through my wood fence on the other side of the property. If U would have kids at that time I would have been a lot more pissed off.
I got there before ambulance or anything and evaluated the jeep driver. I gave full report to the med crew as I was holding c spine. The guy looks up and me and said"I wonder who's house this is?" I looked an my him and said "Mine." He turned white real quick.

Speak up, maybe it will save someone. Surprisingly, no one got hurt bad that day. If you don't talk with them, call PD and ask them to put on an extra patrol and explain the situation.

I've driven into the opposite lane in a school zone when I saw a couple of kids speed around a corner coming my way. Sat there long enough that they had to come to a complete stop. Young kids everywhere and parents going crazy about how fast these 2 kids were driving (separate cars, racing each other).

I don't know if you're an "A$$hole" but if you are, that's not the reason why.

I'd say 150 mph in lakewood. By the time they get closer to green mtn. I'd say they hit top speed with their bikes. At night you can hear them coming for a long ways off.

I personally prefer the respectful approach for first contact. I've found that actually showing a person some respect will do more then unloading on them. I've been on both sides of this issue. Although, wrongly accused about being the reckless speeder. I've always approached them with a firm, but respectful attitude. And I'd say 90% of the time, it works. As for the other 10%, that's when it needs to be stepped up. But that's where guerrilla warfare comes into play. Lol

When approached by my neighbor for supposedly speeding on my dirt bike, I had no respect for him because of his attitude. Even if I was truly being reckless, I'd still have zero respect. We are neighbors and adults. There is no reason to be a complete jerk. Luckily, I was finally able to calm him down, and he did apologize, but there still is little respect for him just because how he handled the situation.

Speed limits and stop signs are invisible in my neighborhood to the same type of idiots. Talking to them politely or yelling doesn't work with any of them. Neighbors all complain also but won't step up because they're intimidated by the violators. Not the same place I moved into 27 years ago !!!

There is a douchebag with a wannabe drift car in my previous neighborhood with the same behavior. This winter, we had a good snowfall put a layer of snowpack on the street which had a good incline. He was trying to get his POS car up the hill (which would have been easy if he had gone down one more street which was more level and come down from above).

He was running it in front of my house, engine at top RPM, rear wheels spinning on the ice, would fail and go back down and start again. This went on for a good half hour. Finally, he was once again in front of my house, top RPM wheels spinning on the ice when I heard a "bang" and a nice cloud of smoke came out from under the hood.

I would've said something too, can't say if it would be in the same manner-depends on my mood at the time. One response from me, if the behavior continued then call 5-0. Let the young guys deal with it, I'm too old and feeble.

I flag them down and calmly ask them to slow down and stop the nonsense. If they want to escalate the situation and become confrontational, I will do the same. I'm not confrontional or agressive at the start. Seems to work better for future living as they are living in the neighborhood.
Mao far this has worked well. And we get a lot of dipshits speeding down the street.

When I became a father, I was a lot less tolerant. I couldn't care less if somebody would like to splatter themselves all over the road, but keep it out of the residential areas and high traffic conditions. There is plenty of empty road to be stupid without endangering others.

SouthPaw
05-03-2016, 11:40
Today our safety guy flagged me down for driving a company vehicle too fast through our parking lot (10mph). Our sign says speed limit is 10mph, I complied. He even stopped right in the middle of the road to make sure I was aware he was unhappy... If they are racing up and down the street in a residential area, that is uncalled for and warranted for what did. My neighbor (old retired guy) hates all motorcycles in general. Constantly stares me down when I pass his house so instead of passing his house at 30mph in 3rd; I ride past in 1st so he can hear that I am coming.
