View Full Version : Detaining other shooters at a range after an AD?
FIL is at 5280. Guess someone got shot in the arm. News at 11? But wierd thing is i guess they told wife everyone there is being kept there......? Wondering if someone shot into another stall vs an accidental self inflicted.
Interesting. Are the cops holding them or 5280?

Man. That's sucks. For everyone.
Guess allegedly which i don't know if true. Chick got it in arm and chest. They took photos of everyone's front and back who were on the range i imagine to compare to video. No other details
Interesting. Hope everyone is okay. I don't even like taking ricochets while at the range, can't imagine being between muzzle and target.
Hopefully it was a 9mm and not a 45 ACP.

The police investigating a crime may legally detain those persons they believe may be witnesses. The four factors used to determine the legality of the detention of witnesses are:
1) the seriousness of the crime witnessed,
(2) the nature of the information the witness can reasonably expect to provide,
(3) the level of proof that the witness can provide,
(4) whether there are less intrusive methods to obtain the same information.
Safety at the scene is always paramount so don't expect to be interviewed right away if they police are still looking for the shooter(s).
Be safe.
Well I was on the range today when this all went down. Last I heard it was only a bit of shrapnel to her arm.
I had been in the store last week checking out a CZ 75B compact PCR. I had worked some OT this week and with the crappy weather I decided to take some pistols with me and also buy the CZ if they still had it. Got there about 1:00 and was done with paper work and on the range right before 2:00. I had taken a peak into the check in area when I first got there and they were not too busy but by the time it took me to get back they had filled up a bit.
A very young couple were filling out paper work and right when I was gearing up to go into the range he was like "I want to rent a AR". With this and the wanna be gangbangers that were all milling about inside I was glad they had two range officers and my assigned lane was the very last one on the right. About a half hour in and being very pleased with my latest purchase there was a bit of commotion. I was loading up some more mags I had been kind of keeping a eye on things anyway but did not really see anything going on. I had heard some non pistol rounds going off at a fairly high rate and know that this is frowned on. It did not last long and figured that one of the RSO had put the kibosh on it. Was it the AR guy ? not sure, they also had a rental PS90 out on the line at the time also.
A few minutes later I heard one of the RSO say to the other " she is just hit on the arm" and "she is at the counter getting cleaned up". It was just a few minutes later when the cease fire and safety all weapons order was given. In came a bunch of sheriff officers and Arvada PD. Everyone was told to leave their stations as is and to come out to lobby. Those of us who were actually inside the range were sectioned off from those who were not inside at the time. We were all asked to ID ourselves and give basic info. After about a hour and half wait the detectives showed up, we were escorted back in and told to stand just outside the booth we were occupying at the time. Since I was by myself and not near the lane she got hit me and my firearms were photographed and told I could clean up and leave.
My best guess. AR kid was shooting too fast for his skill level. Hit something solid and the gal got hit. Not sure, could have been PS90 dude also???
One other observation. The young couple, the group of "kids" and gal that was hit all looked Hispanic. They did not all group together while we were waiting so I do not think they knew each other. I do think that the investigators were looking at this angle though.
I wouldn't flinch at taking some shrapnel, but I could see a brand new shooter freaking the F out about it. It's unfortunate that you had to deal with all that stuff. Glad everyone was ultimately okay.
I always look and assess every individual in every lane before I step into mine. I'm checking for basic safe gun handling and body language while on the line. I'm responsible for my own safety and I take it seriously. I hope she's ok which it sounds like.

Rumor has it...
.45 ACP has "Stopping Power" that's what matters to me!!!!
9mm will go through the intruder and though my walls and strike a bystander in their home or driving by in a car!
And that's the fact Jack......
I don't shoot indoors often at all. Are ricochets and shrapnel problems common? A couple comments in the thread sound like it happens more than rarely...

That is because you are a subject at the behest of the whims of the state.

I've never seen it, but if you look at the target carriers and even the ceiling almost straight up at most places its scary.

Try looking at the ceiling right above your stall. You may/may not be surprised....

I've taken a full round to the shin at an indoor range, as well as a bit of shrapnel. At an outdoor range part of a hollow point got me right in the neck at just the right angle and velocity to make me bleed a little bit.

I've never seen it,
x2. Most I've seen is a spark on a concrete wall, presumably (hopefully) from the farthest stalls to the side.
I have, however, often wondered why the target aren't more beat up. A few places they are, but I've never seen that action live, myself. Granted, I aim for the target and not all the other stuff.
I was at Firing Line one morning probably ~8 years ago and some dude shot off his own thumb. Early morning so nothing much in town was going on and seemed like every cop in Englewood had to come by. I don't know if anyone was "detained" but a buddy and I were stuck up in their retail store for a solid 45 minutes while they sorted it all out.
Edit: Shootist.
Why I like a membership-only range like Whistling Pines (https://www.whistlingpinesgunclub.com/). Not perfect, but much safer grade of shooter.
O2
What I've been hit with behind the firing line I wouldn't define as "shrapnel". It's usually jacketing material that comes back toward the shooter after the lead bullet splatters against the trap. Most of it is usually closer to the floor height, so don't wear open toed sandals.;)
I've also been hit by bullet splatter outside with a group shooting steel targets, so it's not unique to indoor ranges. I've been nicked in the face a couple of times by it. It's one of the reasons we wear safety glasses, right?

Every single cowboy action match you shoot, you will get hit with lead. Sometimes it hurts, sometimes it doesnt, sometimes it draws blood.

That private membership fee doesn't sting as bad now. :D
I've only been hit with hot brass. Sometimes down the back of my neck after my shirt caught it. Most of this happened at The Shootist. Not sure what was up w/ their stalls, but I usually observed ejected shells coming over the stall divider. The guy to my left coming at me and mine going to the guy on the right. Sometimes it bounces off before going over and that's usually when I start dancing. [obama]

Yes, a much better description than I used.
I just wanted to make clear that it was some type of bounce back/ricochet material that she was hit with as opposed to a direct shot or AD type of scenario.

This happened to me a few months ago. I was shooting steel plates outside and took a good chunk to the face. It actually went up under my safety glases and stuck under my eye. I had a pretty good cut on my nose and burn under my eye. Could have been real ugly without safety glasses. The worst part was everyone asking "what happened to your face?!"
I used to shoot at the Silver Bullet quite a bit. I used to get hit by some type of bounce back all the time. I don't know what it was that was hitting me for sure. Usually in the shins, it'd sting pretty good sometimes. I've never noticed it at other ranges.

His pic was taken in case he was lying to the police about where he was. Its not that complicated.
Joe Huffman described an interesting accident at this year's Boomershoot if you follow his blog. Muzzle brake strike sent a piece of bullet jacket into shooter's spotter's leg.

I was present when someone I know took a 12 ga slug ricochet to the forehead. It bled more than just a little......
Lesson leaned : Never shoot steel at close range (under 30 yards) with slugs.

Why does this opinion of mine generate such vitriol in some members of this site? Is this an inconceivable notion?
Lets just say that you are arguing your opinion about a point of law where you have no standing. You were not there, so your opinion is not relevant.
If this happens while you are at a range and the police are there and they tell you not to touch anything while they process the crime scene, please don't touch anything. If you choose to go your own way, don't surprised if you pay some pretty hefty consequences.
If you choose to comply and later decide to file some form of action to have the police destroy any records of your firearms after they have finished their investigation, please do so. You may or may not be successful.
Continually spouting your perceived notion that the local police are collecting some secret database, one crime scene at a time, gets to be wearisome. Many members of the staff here quickly grow tired of it.
Continue at your own peril.
If you think that we're not already in a whole bunch of databases.... [LOL]

The NSA has to glean this data from somebody. That is why they built the huge facility in Utah. Take a picture, download it to a computer and the .gov can grab it. Everybody has a file and it is not subject to the privacy act. If Obama or Hilarious or Trumpet or whoever presides want to screw you over, they can! And they will! Everything is being digitized, your DNA, school records, phone records etc. This is what Snowden warned us about. CB radio is more secure than your cell phone...

Google, Facebook, and Amazon not only are collecting more data on you than the government but they're actually using it on everyone they can, all the time. Facebook has literally been caught running social experiments on people., changing the information presented to them to sway opinions, even conjecturing about changing the course of elections.

This is the final word from a non-staff member on this thread.
If you decide to turn a thread about a shooting at a public range into your vision of government conspiracies, expect to be warned. If you continue past the warning and make this a "Woe is me, people are picking on me." after you've been warned, then enjoy your brief hiatus from the community. If after that brief respite you come back and continue on the "Woe is me, and warn others that you are the lone voice of truth in the wilderness." All I can say is that you should not be surprised when your next break lasts a bit longer.
Yes, milwaukeeshaker, this is your warning. Take it constructively or don't. It doesn't matter to me which you choose, but be very certain that if you continue, you won't continue here.
Be safe.
