Desert and Rocky Mountain bighorn and mountain goat posted today. The rest won't be until around June first. The backdoor trick didn't work this year. They now clear table that shows your current points while the draw for that species is underway.

No no luck for me for sheep or goat, but a buddy drew a bighorn ewe archery tag. Good luck in the draw boys.

Not sure if it is too early to check or not. But historically you can login and go to the Apply for licenses and then Habitat and all other license section. If you see your RES "Animal" APP and it has a 4XX series number it means you got a tag and 5XX means you did not. I have not been able to confirm or deny that trick for this year yet as I have all 4XX numbers on mine and so does my wife and I really doubt we drew everything with the points we had.

I'm hoping the trick does not work this year since I have 4xx as well.
For the past three years, I've put in for some "private land only" tags and have always been drawn.
They also asterisk one of the codes I put in for, showing they had leftover tags last year, so I'm expecting to at least get that one this year.
Guess I'll have to wait and see

jslo
05-17-2016, 19:25
My take.
When you apply for a tag, you are given a file.
In that file you are given a 490 resident deer application.
If you're successful you're given a 590 resident deer (tag)
At least that's how I'm hoping it works.

Ron, elk results aren't out yet.

I tried for mule deer in 105. I can only dream of elk, just my luck I'd get one, then I'd have to get the big bugger out. I'll be lucky if I can handle a deer, an elk is just too big for me to deal with, I don't have anything to transport one with. For elk I'd have to hire an outfitter, and I don't see that happening.

A game cart can be used though that is tough. Best method find a horse wrangler in area you want to go, call and find out about renting a horse for packing. Worth every penny to haul elk out.

If you didn't draw anything than technically you didn't give colorado any money, minus your $3 application fee. And you can always buy over the counter tags or pickup a leftover tag. What area and species did you apply for that you didn't draw?

draw results and preference points. Type in your last name, birthdate and zip code. Unless you are like me and have your CID memorized!
but that info will bring you to another screen which will show the year and the tag you drew next to the year. I've seen people get confused by the year when results haven't been posted.
if it says successful, they will mail the tag to the address you specified when you applied. Takes a little while, but we are just waiting for the season to open now so no big rush. I go to Walmart or other sporting goods place that sells tags and get a plastic sleeve that your license fits into. Then store it in a safe space so you don't lose it and know where it is at.
once the season is ready to start, sign the first part, put it in your wallet and keep it on you at all times

Hummer
06-03-2016, 23:16
I drew cow elk and pronghorn buck, so I'll also pick up an OTC bull elk and a bear tag. Missed on buck deer for the fourth year. Their populations aren't doing well so CPW has cut back in most areas. Missed on moose seventeen years straight.

Shared some fine elk loin steaks with family at the cabin yesterday. Even better than the filet mignon at the Stanley in Estes on Wednesday, which was pretty darned good. It's hard to beat a well prepared steak from any Colorado big game animal.

Got my application for a permit to hunt the Jumping Cow SWA in 105. App proudly announced the addition of 3000 acres to the north, called the Woodard area, in addition to areas A, B, and C.

So I drove there to check it out, and ended up at the Woodard ranch house. Talked to Mr. Frank Woodard hisself, owner of the property. Showed him my CPW map and asked if I was at the right place, and he said yes, that's my property, but it's not part of the Jumping Cow SWA!

Hmmm, well now, really? The CPW is taking applications for people to hunt on your land, and you don't know about it??? Interesting.

So I had to visit the CPW office for a WTF session, they're "going to look into it." Sounds kinda sketchy to me. But I applied anyway. Guess we'll see.

I almost forgot to pack my damn tag. Had it on the cork board and just happened to look up and see it. That would have been rather awkward.

Yea, that's embarrassment, one that I've done more than once. I've since been in the habit of putting all my licenses in a marked envelope in a certain divider on my desk. Last year in a hurry I grabbed a marked envelope without checking licenses inside. It held my bear tag but not the elk tags. When I set up camp and prepared my pack for the following morning I discovered the problem. I had to make the 3 hour drive back home late at night, and returned the next day, missing opening morning. That sucked.

Pack early and double check for everything you're going to need.

I live in a nice suburban neighborhood in Parker, definitely NOT rural, and saw a couple of nice mulie bucks snoozing in the shade today in a grassy area about 50 feet off Jordan road. Not uncommon to see deer at that spot. See them around the 'hood quite often actually. Saw a nice herd last winter right out our back door in the schoolyard across the street. See one big ol' boy in particular every once in awhile. Guess they know they're safe here.

Thank you. :) I shot her at about 8am, and the other one was shot in the same place at about 8:05am. We didn't get them both back to the truck until 5pm. It was a very long day.

Both elk were shot at approximately 35 yards. I have a video of me taking the one pictured, but it's long and boring and you can hardly see anything due to the wide lens on the GoPro. Shot placements were excellent. Neither animal knew what happened and just laid down within steps of impact. No make up shots required. From the time that I turn on the camera, I could see game the entire time and patiently waited for the best opportunity. Shot occurs exactly 11 minutes into the video with an available shot on one of the four animals visible almost the entire time. I think we got very lucky and don't expect to come across an opportunity like that ever again.

Got a cow, she looks just like Irvings!

45 yards, ran downhill and expired in a smal drainage. Back straps are already cut into steaks and in the freezer, the rest is at the processor getting specialty products and more steaks as I have about 600lbs of burger and a bit of steaks from my bison I took in February.

i got my buddy a shot with his muzzleloader at a 4x4 bull but he whiffed for the third time in a row but this time he got 2 trees, so that's an improvement.

now just waiting for waterfowl and pheasants and my deer tag in December.

Our group had one missed shot at another cow (buck fever), and I want to say four missed shots at some bucks? I felt like a sharp shooter, but at only 35 yards, I pretty much couldn't screw it up. Some of those shots at deer were over 200 yards with a muzzle loader, which seems outside of my own skills.

What is the furthest any of you have taken game with a muzzle loader?

Correct. I don't remember there ever being an OTC rifle or muzzleloader tag for antelope.

That is one big fat cow, congratulations, Irving! That should be a year's worth of excellent meat. If you are butchering yourself, package most of the hind quarters as steaks. Many cuts of the round are as good and tender as the loin/backstrap.

"I think we got very lucky and don't expect to come across an opportunity like that ever again."

A 35 yard shoton an elk is a gift to be remembered. I recall vividly the scenes where I took a cow at 35 yards, and another at 19 yards. My average is ~70 yards, the longest is about 220 yards.

Dal sheep is excellent eating. Some of the most tender and lean meat you will ever eat. The Dall sheep is related to but still different than the Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep that we have here in Colorado. Dad was one of the lucky 11 to draw a tag in Colorado last year for Desert bighorn, and they eat amazing as well.

Spotted a herd of 30 to 40. Hiked up 2500 ft and watched their pattern for a couple hours. Planned next morning to get on them before they headed for water. Daughter and buddy hiked up to trees while I signaled when save to cross fields with no cover. Plan came together perfectly until a last minute "sniff" and missed rush shot at about 50 yds. Got on them again, within 100yds on the other side, but got busted again before a clear shot. Might have been a blessing seeing they were at 12500 and we were 6 miles in.

Just returned from hunting elk and bear on public land just outside the Flat Tops Wilderness--31 years in the same area. I climbed over the mountain and still hunted in the dark spruce-fir forest. Got lucky on opening day, connecting with a cow elk at 27 yards, a single quick shot offhand. Yea! Another year of fine meat for the family. My 28th elk.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g292/COHummer/Guns/Hunting/2016-Elk_zpsxmpkhph6.jpg

After field dressing and laying the parts over a log to cool overnight, I returned the next day to pack out the meat. Soon after, a Pine Marten arrived to share in the bounty, hauling scraps to cache high into the trees, safe from other ground predators.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g292/COHummer/Guns/Hunting/Pine-Marten-vs-elk-head_zpssrfln5do.jpg

Pine Martens are cool critters, one of my favorite mammals. I've seen them maybe 40-50 times. Like a miniature Wolverine or a supersized Long-tailed Weasel, Pine Martens are ferocious predators able to chase down squirrels in the trees. They are also smart, opportunistic scavengers. Ten years ago I watched a pair feed off the remains of a buck mule deer I had shot. And Martens have sneaked in to steal trout from me while fishing on a few occasions.

I had a heck of a time getting photos in the dark forest because these guys are always moving. I still had tags for bull elk and bear, so I returned to the kill site four days later in hope of finding a bear on the gut pile, or maybe getting more views of the Pine Marten. No evidence of bear but I was surprised to find two Pine Martens working the carcass. Apparently the male didn't appreciate sharing with a smaller female and they fought twice while I was there, growling and barking repeatedly. It was an amazing scene.

They are tenacious and strong, dragging the front portion of the elk rib cage down the hill about 60 feet.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g292/COHummer/Guns/Hunting/Pine-Marten-on-elk-hide_zpsdbkl1lcf.jpg

I returned again the following day--didn't see the martens but found they had turned over the gut pile and moved it about four feet to access the fat. The elk head was missing--no tracks besides the martens and birds were present. I think they hauled the head off.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g292/COHummer/Guns/Hunting/Pine-Marten-on-elk-ribs_zpscbxxgvtw.jpg

It was a fun and productive hunt--although the very warm temperatures made for noisy ground conditions, and there were few elk in the area where snow is required to move the larger herds out of the high country. Most reports are that the first and second season harvest has been poor this year.

Yes, I think a lot of hunters went home without this year. Elk harvest is so weather dependent. In most areas it takes deep snow to move elk to their wintering grounds. A little bit of snow is great for tracking but 1-2 feet makes getting around really tough for the hunter. But once on the move, it's like rush hour in elk city. The outfitter I camp near packed out only five elk in 1st and 2nd seasons this year. Last year they packed 28 elk. In 2012 they packed 43. There's a hunting camp down the road where I visited and shared a meal with some great fellows last Friday. Only one hunter killed an elk, a nice bull. Another hunter killed a black bear.

Well, I'm bummed. I have a permit to hunt a new SWA, I made several scouting trips to check it out and the deer were fairly frolicking about. I did a lot of homework and Google Earthing, and had my plans all laid out. Success was imminent!

So I was there at o-dark-thirty Saturday, ready for glory. As the sun came up, the friggin COWS started moving about in every direction! When I scouted the place, there weren't any cows there, and it looked there hadn't been for years. But now that my tag turned green, there was suddenly 2-300 damned COWS all over my hunting paradise. And not a mule deer to be seen.

Hunted the place four times in two days, NO deer, I didn't even scare up any that went scampering away. The only deer even close by were on the other side of the fences, making faces at me. Bummed me out, but at least I got in some good hiking. Lot of walking for a fat old man.....

Cattle don't really bother the elk from my experience. While annoying, especially if you are tenting it and cow pies and cattle all over the place in the middle of the night kinda sucks, but the elk aren't really bothered by them.

it is frustrating the DOW leases out areas for hunting and pays money from our license fees for these spots only to have cattle and logging and other operations going during hunting season. But at the same time at least it is public access that would otherwise be private hunting only and only leased by an individual or permission only.

We have the same issue out East. SWA and there are cows all over our generally secluded area cause no other hunters want to walk it. Went there over the weekend and the cows were following us around like we were the farmers and no whitetail to speak of. And then of course since the cows are there the farmer has to drive around to feed them for the morning and drives the truck around. Usually the cows are moved for hunting season but this year all of our spots are covered with cows.

Rifle is a Rossi 92 in .45 Colt, 24". Really had to jack up the rear sight for this shot.

Deer was right here, I was behind the dead cottonwood in the center of the pic, sitting on the creekbank. I don't have a rangefinder, and my distance estimation skills suck, but I'm guessing 250-300 yards. Looks a LOT farther in person. It was waaaay too far for me to attempt, but this was the only deer I'd seen in 6 trips and I just had to try. Besides, she was staring right at me, there was no chance to stalk in closer. I was hidden behind the tree, but she had already heard me. Just a lucky shot, a pure "hail Mary" play, but I'll take it.

<edit> Just pinpointed it on Google Earth and it confirmed, 250 yards. Maybe I should buy a Powerball ticket.....
