SO I have some 250g XTP's that I was planning on loading up in some .460 mag, but I'm seeing from other sources that this isn't a great idea because they can't stand up to the velocities. Do any of the great minds around here have any thoughts/input?

I can't help a lot, but I did have really good results taking that bullet up to 1,200 fps in .45 Colt. I don't know what barrel length you're shooting, but I could see it losing a good amount of weight in the 1,900 fps range if it hits flesh and bone.

Their website says the range is 800-1600.

I guess it depends on what velocities you think you'll get from your barrel. If it's one of those monster snubbies, I think it would work fine. If it's the one with a 10" barrel, it's probably going to drive it harder than it was intended.

i thought you had to use the XTP MAG over 1400 FPS, i guess if its 1600 i could save some cash on my 45LC and save the MAGs for the 454. I guess it depends on how fast you wanna push them. I shot some XTP mags this mornihg at 1900+.

From what I read it can cause premature erosion of the forcing cone...but I'm sure a few rounds can't hurt

it's a 4 1/2 inch barrel, so I guess it couldn't hurt to try...otherwise they'll be going in some mild .454's

I know a few silhouette shooters that will testify that jacketed bullets in general cause premature erosion of the forcing cone. Not a lot of guys have shot a Smith & Wesson to death, so I'll take their word for it.

Then it's settled. Operation: Potentially Explode my Gun and Die shall commence....whenever I get around to it.

You'd be surprised at how controllable they are in that x-frame. Hell 45 LC feels like a .22...
