Need Info about kids rules in 3 gun competitions. I looked and looked and cant find info.

I looked all over the internet and cant seem to find any sources of info.

Are there any special accomadations for kids doing 3 gun? Do they allow .22lr? How much energy does the 12 gauge need to be? My loads for my kids now work on steel knockdown targets. If we have to use 9mm for the kids, does anyone have a light recipe that will still cycle the action on a xdm?

If .22lr is allowed, is it allowed for both rifle and handgun? If so, what handgun do you recommend? or conversion.

Any info would be appreciated. My son competes regularly in cowboy action competition. This involves 4 guns, 2 handguns, 1 double barrel 12 gauge and his lever action rifle. He has never had any issues with safety. He wants to try this now as well.

Maybe we can hit Pawnee for the 3rd weekend 3gun shoot.

I have plenty of Ars, plenty of handguns and plenty of shotguns. I may need extensions for the shotguns. what capacity and what carriers? How many pistol mags?

The kid that shoots our IDPA matches out at CRC started with a .22lr pistol, and he was able to knock down poppers just fine. I think that he officially used a .22lr for as little as two matches before he bumped up to 9mm and continued beating half the field. He is the same age and size as your kid. More than likely, you'll want to directly contact the match director and ask, as it may be a case by case basis. I doubt your kid would have any trouble since he already shoots cowboy stuff. Other than that, I've never shot a 3-gun match so I'm not that much help.

There is no sanctioning body for 3gun so every match has differing rules. Best bet contact the match director before the match and they will tell you how it works for their match.

SoCo in Colorado Springs and Ben Lomond both have kids who are regularly shooting 22's for their rifles and pistols. There's a mix of 12 and 20 gauge shotguns in there.

There are special rules for spinners (hit them a certain number of times and/or hit top and bottom) and if there's a clear hit on a knockdown steel that doesn't fall down the RO will call it good. There are plenty of considerations to make sure everyone has a good time.

It's a good idea to check with the MD of the match you're thinking about but I'll bet you won't be turned away.

Actually, for most 3Gun matches, there is a sanctioning body with a ruleset that has been well vetted and is consistent. Weld, CRC and BigBen all use USPSA rules, and there is no minimum age requirement. As long as the safety proficiency can be demonstrated in the required new shooter brief, then not an issue.

There is no provision for RF in USPSA rule sets. However, the MD will typically allow a junior to shoot RF. Honestly, if 9mm and .223 are too much for your child, I would not even try the shotgun..that is the horsepower. In most cases, the SG targets can be shot with RF pistol or rifle, so long as they skip the aerials, and that is the RO just not setting those targets.

3Gun is expensive for sure. But if he can shoot guns within the divisions, not for lack of height and mass, then shooting RF would be frowned upon. In any event, it would be shooting for no score.
