I have 5 wild rabbit pups nested up in my front yard. They've been there for a little over a week & are moving around, eyes open & look like they're growing well.

Would it be possible to pen them up and raise/breed them as a food source, or would that likely be a waste of effort?

It sounds like they won't domesticate into pets, but that's not the intended purpose.

That would be an illegal taking of small game under Colorado law.

Might as well purchase meat rabbits since most of the cost will be for housing and maintenance anyway.

Getting a breed specifically meant for meat production would be a better option I would think. You wouldn't need many to start since they procreate so fast.

This. Raising cottontails for meat is like keeping grouse instead of chickens. Better yield. There's really very little meat on cottontails anyway.

For a disaster or lawless scenario like SHTF, sure... but normal circumstances, no. They do procreate very quickly.

I have eaten wild cottontail, they are not good to eat. Not much meat, tough and stringy Domestic rabbits are total opposite. I have had those and they are pretty good.

Sounds like you need to do some pest control ... Before 5 become the incestuous 20 ... Like around our neighborhood.

Suburban cottontails aren't that bad...or so I've heard. [emoji6]
