View Full Version : "Bullet-proof" Carhartt Jacket
http://nypost.com/2016/05/19/nypd-checking-ammo-after-knifemans-jacket-stops-cops-bullets/
Four of the shots that cops fired at a madman waving a knife in Midtown failed to penetrate his jacket — which was not bullet-proof — and the NYPD will now check the weapons for malfunction, law enforcement sources told The Post.
Four of the bullets got lodged in Conrad’s Carhartt jacket, sources said, adding that he was not wearing bulletproof vest.
I have a Carhart jacket that used to belong to my dad. Not sure how many years he had it before I got it but I've had it for almost twenty years. It's thick and even though it's old and well worn it's still pretty stiff. Never thought it would be bulletproof though.

It was 9mm.
It was 9mm.
Well, what did they expect?

It was 9mm.
So .45 would have just bounced off then. [Coffee]

Need a 357 sig to penetrate the Carhartt...
I heard 10mm was specifically designed to penetrate Carhartt.

You know it's tough when it takes two seasons to just break it in.

It yields a bit more after 2 seasons, but it's never broken. The Carhartt jacket is like a palm tree in a hurricane.
Word has it that Chuck Norris has the only Carhartt jacket that is actually broken in.

NYPD actually hit something four times? Must have emptied every magazine.

That's what I was thinking.
They also hit a bystander
They also hit a bystander
Only 1 bystander, so they're improving.
FWIW, I still have a Walls jacket that's 20 years old and wearing like iron.
Granted, I don't wear it every single day on a jobsite or ranch, or pull fence, but it's gotten a lot of use over the years and I'm very impressed with it.
Carhartt will be banned in NYC soon....
Maybe he is related to Chuck Norris

They should look into background checks on Carhartts. I mean, why do you need something that durable?

Does that mean they're only bulletproof for 15 rds in Colorado and then your dead ?

Why would the NYPD be in Colorado?
That would be a good commercial for them.
I like this one, "The bullets we have may be defective.....when we fire our weapons, we want to make damn sure that our bullets hit our target..."
So....missing the target means they have defective ammo?
So....missing the target means they have defective ammo?
That's my excuse.

I've seen mention of 124gr +P gold dot.
But I'd bet money this is all just standard crap reporting by the news, and the bullets were not stopped by the jacket.
The news agencies have shown time and time again they are completely clueless about anything related to guns.

I suspect that there was more at play here than a magical cowboy mafia jacket stopping bullets.
Seriously, I can think of at least one reason why the jacket wasn't magic and neither the gun nor ammo was manufactured poorly; NYPD firearms training. Got to oil the gun, so why not oil the bullets, right? Oil contaminated ammo that the primer went off and not the powder. It could have been faulty ammo, but I would believe some ignorant NYPD cop doing something stupid before pointing at the Gold Dot ammo. Shit, he may have even "washed" the ammo. That would make way more sense than all of this magical Carhartt jacket bullshit.
It's a thing. There are plenty of stories about denim or big down filled coats gumming up hollow points and making the rounds all but ineffective. I doubt rounds were bouncing off the coat, they may have hit and either not penetrated well or not expanded properly.
Just a reminder that we are not carrying insta-death ray guns. Just because you fired doesn't mean you hit. Just because you hit doesn't mean it worked. And even if it did work like it was supposed to the bad guy may not care.

Just better hope you can stop them in 15 rounds or less before a reload... Because guns.

Please post even one confirmed story where a denim or down jacket stopped a 9mm round from penetrating. [facepalm]

Any tests I've seen where the hollow point clogged and caused an issue, it caused the bullet to fail to expand, which meant that the round over-penetrated... Some denim in the hollow point won't make the bullet fail to penetrate.
Thank you. That is the better articulated version of what I was trying to say. I am not suggesting that heavy clothing would stop a bullet, but that it may inhibit expansion of a hollow point, thereby decreasing its effectiveness. Perhaps "all but ineffective " was overstating it a bit.

I wouldn't be surprised if in fact, either the ricochet hypothesis was correct, or the bullets did penetrate but lodged on opposite side of body in the jacket.
But the NYPD screwing up their own ammo works for me too.

As many predicted, bullets penetrated the bad-guy, but did not go thru the jacket after exiting the bad-guy.
So....the Carhartt jacket could have prevented some bystander injuries due to over-penetration.

Okay I just had to post this. Remember this guy? 9mm out of an MP-5. He didn't need denim OR down. Just his forehead.
