View Full Version : Anyone else in COS taking a long lunch today? Thunderbird crash. Pilot survived.
Thunderbirds should be overhead in a little while, quite a lot of people using the New Life parking lot.

Our office in Gleneagle is having pizza outside. But I'm working from home, so not as close to the 'action'...

[wet blanket]I just can't enjoy these public displays of patriotism anymore.
It just reminds me that we're a once great but dying republic.
Now when I see displays of our military might my first thought is; "I wonder how long before those guns are turned on us." Especially when it comes to the Air Force (the most leftist of all the military services ... and now shifting focus from air superiority to Cyber war superiority, which CLEARLY has more uses against the American people than our enemies).[/wet blanket]

True. Pilot ejected. Safe and somewhat sound.
Are they crashing their F-16s to make the F-35 look better? [Coffee]
Glad to hear the pilot is safe.

Ok, went down to check it out. Jet is in the low ground east of Powers. Cops are on site and keeping people back. They say it may be leaking fuel. Everyone and their mom is showing up to see.
News crews are there as well.
Nothing to see, move along.

Does anybody know if there is any truth to the rumor that one of the Thunderbirds was trying to ram into Air Force One over Colo Springs and was subsequently shot down. JK!! LOL
Seriously, does anybody have any details on what really happened to the Thunderbird that went down.
OK, it appears that this is a duplicate post to one about lunch in CO Springs, oops.

Sounds like engine failure. It crash landed in the field right across from my office. I saw them coming back in for landing. Pilot ejected and is okay. We watched them fly over and bank to turn back to the runway and he went straight and ditched it in the field.

On a side note it looks like the Navy just lost a Blue Angel and pilot.

Early reports are saying the downed Blue Angel was the #6 Pilot, a Marine Captain from Durango.
And the Thunderbird pilot was #6...

To top off today's bad stories, 3 Ft. Hood soldiers dead and 6 missing when their truck turned over on a flooded road. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/06/02/3-dead-6-missing-after-army-tactical-vehicle-swept-away-in-floodwaters-near-fort-hood.html?intcmp=hpbt1
I left a little early to avoid a traffic jam on Intercourse Parkway. Do they normally do a pass over Peterson with the smoke-generators on? With the haze, and keeping my attention fully on the road ;) it was a little tough to tell.

Indeed, a sad day for our military and their families. :(

Marine Captain Jeff Kuss, Durango. RIP.
Met his dad on a job site about a month ago. He was super proud of his son. I am sorry for his loss....

Word is the Blue Angel's pilot failed to eject, and subsequently died, because he wanted to control the plane to ensure it didn't crash into any homes or other buildings. He died by looking to protect citizens. He died a hero. My thoughts and prayers to him and his family.
The wife and I were at the Springs airport today and saw the Thunderbirds fly past. One of them let out a quick trail of smoke - we thought it was the usual smoke ejected when the team is doing their routine. Then, the plane just disappeared from our view, but all of the others were still visible. The direction of the plane would put it exactly where the downed plane landed. I heard just a few minutes after seeing this that one of their planes had just crashed. I think we saw it happen-ish (didn't see the pilot ejecting or the actual landing/crash. Was very pleased to hear that the pilot survived.
How in the world did that F16 end up in that good of shape after the pilot ejected? He must have had it trimmed off just right when the engine failed or something. I would imagine the CG would shift pretty far back once the pilot and that seat depart the nose which would most likely end up with that plane living up to the lawn dart nickname it has. Kind of wondering if he didn't just put it down in the field and then just walk away without ejecting.

He ejected; there's footage of him floatin' down under a round bubble canopy. Musta barely been crawling and barely off the ground when he punched out to have sustained that little damage, though.

Yeah just saw new video that showed the plane closer up, looks way worse than the initial photos and you can see the skid marks.
That F-16 looks like it belly flopped rather than slid onto the ground with forward motion. The plane is probably pancaked.

Here's a toast...
Ft. Hood numbers have been revised to 5 dead, 4 still missing. Prayers go out to these families. Just goes to show that even here in the states, being in the military is dangerous. Thank you for your service.
Saw the overhead video of the Thunderbird F-16. There's actually a debris field that wasn't visible yesterday.
