So end of July (27th - 30th) I had family plans to take wife, myself and kids on a tour of Devils Tower WY and then to Mt Rushmore over the course of 3-4 days. Was going to rough it and just pitch our new family tent where ever we were.

I learned now that my in-laws, both are coming at the time I had this all planned. Wife wants them to come to have a vacation with us, the logistics of hauling all 6 of us plus camping gear is not going to cut it. Need a bus for that.

I have been looking around and found some good prices for a pop up for about $300 but they are all booked for the time we had planned. Ugh......

Taking a long shot here, but doesn't hurt to ask. Anyone got a decent pop up or camper that can sleep 6 (4 adults & 2 kids) during the dates I listed above? Also can be towed by a PILOT w/a V6. (Only car we have that can seat more than 5)

Willing to make a deal or something.

PM me let me know. [Beer]

Might want to rethink your "Plans" That's the beginning of The Black Hills Motorcycle Rally.. Better known as Sturgis.
Unless you don't mind sitting in one long line of traffic. ANYWHERE north of Cheyenne to Rapid City.

CAMPING [ROFL2] You have a camp site reserved. Or were you going to wing it? Because there's slim pickings, real slim. Not to mention any place open will be in full party mode.

Your winning the award for most negative nancy vibes here Jim............... [Coffee]

I was aware of Sturgis, but I have down this year it is Aug 8th to the 14th, I am not aware of something prior apparently? Plan was get going before it got crazy. I was going to make reservations at KOA's for camp sites, so the boys can use the swimming pool and other kid items, I held off which is good as the guest list expanded now.

If you thought Jim was being a party pooper, wait until you hear my idea.

I'd skip the camping, blame the wife for her family hoping into the mix late, and just stay in a hotel.

If you rent the pop-up for $300 and sell it after the trip you should break even !!! [Sarcasm2]

Debbie Downer dude, Debbie Downer. Yes it's that time frame. However That area of SD is packed 1 week ahead of time.

If you want to try something different. Take a trip to Virginia City MT. Going the west side of yellowstone for some fantastic scenery.

Wish, but limited fun money for this trip, the cost would double and we have other summer fun stuff to fulfill in the budget.

I am thinking of moving my plans up one week, giving me 3 weeks until Sturgis.

Starting @ $100 per for a pull behind. Plus damage, cleaning etc deposits. A driving unit, say 26' $250 per these are off season rates. In season, IMO If you have not reserved a unit by now, don't be surprised if there are none available for the months of jun-sept.

DO NOT mention you were thinking about bringing your dog. That's a dis-qualifier, once they are aware of it. IF you rent factor in 1-2 days ahead of time on road and same upon return, for loading, unloading & cleaning. An affordable 26' can be found, in North Denver / off Quebec.

For Tricavscout, call the camper place on prospect, just east of 25.

if you do still go to Devils Tower, the campground in Sundance (Mountainview) is pretty nice and has a good pool there. It is very easily accessible from the highway and pretty close to Devils Tower as well. Not a bad base camp to go explore the area as most things are a short drive away.

Yeah that was my problem, something the honda Pilot can tow is already booked out at the smaller mom and pop places, the bigger venues were insane with their prices and wanted you to book for more time than we were going

We are still going but convinced my wife that the logistics of bringing her parents along shot everything through the roof. so we are going to try and move the trip up to mid july instead, and then take her parents somewhere more local to CO.

We are spending a day and a half at Devils tower and a day at Mt Rushmore. What is funny my boys are REALLY excited to go to Mt Rushmore and not sure why? :)

I just went to Black Hills last fall. Mt Rushmore was actually maybe the least cool thing we did. It's kind of like "yep, seen it, what's next?"

This was one of the cooler things: https://www.nps.gov/mimi/index.htm (Minuteman missile site national historic site). There's also a aviation museum out this way that we didn't go to but want to.

Wind Cave was very cool. Jewel cave is now on our list of things to do.

this looks really cool and we're going to go try this at some point: http://www.1880train.com/

this is really cool: http://mammothsite.com/ doesn't take long, and it's amazing I've actually been to this before and yet I would go again.

Devil's tower is of course amazing.

OK. here's my suggestion, or similar pull behind.
http://denver.craigslist.org/rvs/5633843962.html
get it home and back on the market before 7/30 - first week in Aug. If you loose $1 - 500 i'd be surprised. We have Never lost money on a pull behind, never. If anything You could come out $500 richer.

There's a few specific items to look at to see how well they maintained it. The real tell is look under it. If the black material is torn, water damaged or looks funky look elsewhere. The torn material could be from off road, that's not a problem. If it looks torn but not from road damage. There could be small critters nesting there off season.

Did they winterize it, did they drain some water from the heater, does there look like serious water stains along the water lines? Most important around the sink and water heater, feel the floor. Is it solid or not.

Any ad that says they replaced the flooring..................serious water leaks.

I rented from Colorado Camper Renter last summer. They ARE pet friendly and staff was great. I would highly recommend them. Had a great time in one of the RPods over a long weekend.
